That Mongul apparently had the most powerful grip since DS.

What that means, depends.

Could just mean between the events of JL #1 when they met DS and Mongul, Superman hadn't met anyone of worth, or whatever. But he's up there.

Zod was working Clark when they met with Faora, pre Rebirth of course.
