And how unfair is it that King Kirby lived when he lived, while a guy like Liefeld made out like a bandit because he came along in the "boom" years, and happened to be "likeable"?

Seriously, that's all I hear about why he was so successful. People liked him, the man knew how to make friends. If it wasn't for Kirby, who got NOTHING for his dedication (A pittance, but that's it), guys like Liefeld wouldn't have been able to sweep up.

Someone get a time machine and switch Kirby and Liefeld around, so the King could get his piece.

Does Lee get those same types of tributes?

Lee gets all the credit in person as many believe him to be the soul creator of the Marvel universe.

Lee is the man, but Kirby was the king.

*nods*

Honestly, it's up in the air if Kirby would have made out any better had he lived as long. He was a workhorse, a brilliant idea guy, but wasn't the type to advocate for himself.

So he kind of got taken advantage of, imo.

He gets the royalty checks. Tributes are largely for people who didn't receive their due in other ways. Stan is revered, but he's the de facto patriarch of a media empire whose every news release is an indirect tribute.

Yea i suppose. I wonder does he feel guilty at all. He just had a birrhday yesterday and he had a really good comment on his mortality

Liefeld learned from Kirby and got the hell away from Marvel when he realized his and the other Image creator's value.

Liefeld's name certainly helped legitimize the venture.

Strictly speaking, I don't think they "needed" him, but he did have his fans (God knows why.)

.. He created Deadpool, Cable and X-Force.

..that should say it all.

yeah he def did some good things. there was a time i didn't mind his art either. it became more stylized as he went along--to his detriment imo. /shrug

Of all Kirby’s work, he’s New Gods are still too me, one of the greatest plethora of characters ever put to paper.

I’ve yet to read anything that surpasses that world he created.

new gods were a great creation. impossible to place any of his work above his early collaborations at marvel though imo. him and lee literally defined marvel and from there on, comics in general. ff, thor, hulk, ironman, x-men, avengers, galactus.... almost impossible to believe that just 2 people could have been at the heart of all that. him and lee really are legends.

speaking of new god. the concept of new gods is so interesting, there are so much potential to explore. you can literally create a world just for them.
Look what marvel did with thor and dr strange mythos back in the day, marvel literally created an entire world of pantheon gods/demons and their story and it was interesting as hell. classic dr strange book and old thor issues were still some of the best comics ive ever read

dc on the other hand have not explored nearly as much on their gods, there are so many chracters they can use in their mythologies. including the captain marvel mythos. dont't get me wrong dc has quality magic based books, its just they are in vertigo.

back when dc created the quintessence and the god wave, it was awesome. i have not been impressed with what dc has done with their pantheons in new 52, all we've seen so far is focus on darkseid and a few new gods.

Which sucks given the treatment they get

Both companies are all over the place now with continuity issues and events that dont progress the characters or stories

I love Thor's confidence.
