Killing axe edge used multiple times is not congruent with not trying to kill.
Especially after admitting you are willing to kill if the threat continues, their de-gammifying efforts were failing up to that point.
(Also, you can not try to kill and still not be holding back.)
On the other hand Hulk was weakened and literally *was* trying to talk Thor down.
Anyway you slice it, it was a terrible showing for Thor.

Thor got embarrassed by a weakened and holding back chulk while admitting he was willing to kill him as the plan to un-hulk him had failed up to that point. And proved he was willing to kill by swinging his huge cosmic level axe multiple times.
