It annoys me when a writer takes someone else's character and has him beaten down in a few panels just to establish the cred of his new guy.
I mean the King Hyperion stories in Exiles were hardly deep and meaningful, but at least they were fun and had some good moments, and the author took the time to build the story a bit. And the heroes/villains he was killing were all alternates so it wasn't such a problem.
Then there's Blue Marvel. His introduction story wasn't particularly good or interesting. A new character comes out of nowhere and the writer tries to shoehorn him into Marvel continuity. His arch-enemy is so tough he can beat down the entire Avengers team, but Blue Marvel beats him alone, wow! He can crack the moon with a punch and belt Sentry into orbit! He's an old friend of Namor's! And the President! He's a respected friend of the Watcher - wow! He's got extensive military experience too! Oh, and he's also a genius physicist who developed something that even Reed Richards said was impossible! Come on, all in his first story??? Talk about the most overdone debut ever. The guy was like something out of bad Marvel fanfiction or one of those characters people put in the KMC "Create your own character" thread as a deliberate joke.
It's all a little much for a guy who seems to have no real story worth telling and no point in existing other than the writer saying "look how cool and powerful my character is!". He's like Sentry again only he's even more pointless and even more over done. Kind of makes me look forward to when some other writer has Blue Marvel get beaten up just to establish his new villain...
