There Will NOT be a Spiderman 4...

At least Tobey doesn't seem to think so:

As the superhero franchise, which has taken in more than $1.6 billion worldwide, returns to Comic-Con to promote next year's Spider-Man 3, some are wondering whether the series is making its final bow.

Including star Tobey Maguire.

"We've done an amazing job at keeping things fresh," Maguire tells USA TODAY. But, he adds, "it's hard to imagine continuously coming up with stories that deserve to be told. I'm not sure if there are more stories for this character that are interesting enough to be excited about doing more."

Sony Pictures, the distributor for the films, isn't saying either way. And superhero franchises, such as the Hulk, have been pronounced dead, only to resurface under a new director or production company.

But Spider-Man producers concede they haven't looked beyond this installment of the series, which they always viewed as a trilogy.

"We don't have a book we're adapting, like a Lord of the Rings," says Spider-Man producer Laura Ziskin. "It's open-ended. But this could be the last. We've never started on the next movie while we were working on the current one."

More than a dozen big-studio movies will be featured at the nation's largest comic-book convention this weekend, but none come shouldering more excitement or expectations than Spider-Man. It's due in theaters May 4.

Producers — and perhaps, they say, a star from the movie — will unveil some hastily gathered footage from the film Saturday as a goodwill gesture to the convention, which has been a taproot of the franchise's loyal following.

"This is a going-home kind of thing," producer Avi Arad says. "We brought the first one here and the fans have supported us and (director) Sam Raimi from the start. We wanted to say thank you."

Filmmakers are closely guarding plot points to the film, though it will feature a new villain, Sandman, played by Thomas Haden Church.

And Ziskin promises one foe will be Spidey himself.

"He'll have to battle villains within," she says. "I love what we've done with this character."

So does Maguire.

"This one, to me, has more interesting twists and turns" than the first two, he says. "It's been a fun ride."

As much as I like Tobey, he does NOT speak for Sony studios.

They are not going to kill a cash cow like this franchise. Not in a million years. There will be a Spider-Man 4 and 5 and 6.

Guaranteed.

I don't know....

Dunst isn't coming back either....

Plus Spiderman is tired now, the third film will be great, but only comic book nerds will want a whole series of films like Rocky, or something.

The studio cares about money, bottom line, and the general public will be done with it after this one, just as the main actors are.

They don't want to be typecasted in these roles, and I'm sure that Sam Raimi will want to go on to other projects as well.

Franco's character will die, Church's character will die, so will Aunt May's, we will get far more Venom than you think, about the last 40 min. will deal with Brock in the suit after Spidey, and it will end the trilogy.

Think about it, they are revisiting part 1,(Uncle Ben's death) showing us a new angle on something we already knew. (see scary movie 3 for trilogy rules.)

I can't see the studio backing a film that they would be doubtfull of the general public going to see, especially when all the main stars of the franchise aren't coming back.

Tobey's comments are a soft-letdown so that people won't be pissed later on.

I dunno, I bet there'll be a 4. And James Bond had many different actors playing him, yet people still watched those.

Nothing's certain, obviously, but I think we've got a good shot at seeing a SM4 if it makes a shitload of money at the box office. It might not be something really soon, but I think it'll happen.

As long as SM3 makes a shitload of money for Sony there will be a SM4.

It's far more of a likelihood than a Superman Returns Again, right now. 🙂

people dont go to see tobey, they want spider-man / peter parker. A new actor is good. Tobey doesnt even like or read spider-man comics if he thinks three movies cover every spider-man story worth telling.

Dunst leaving is actually a favor to us...😉

Yeah if it makes even close to the same amount of money that the last one did,its guaranteed there will be another one.Sony wont stop while its making a shitload of money and like someone else said, look at all the james bond films that have been made with different actors and yeah, thats true,Tobey doesnt speak for sony.It would be in the best interest for sony to stop at 3 with Mcguire leaving after this one not wanting to be typecast but if its a huge money maker.forget it,they wont.they'll make another one if sm3 comes close to the same box office take that sm 2 did.

X marks, you really think that they will continue the franchise without Tobey Mcguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, or Sam Raimi?

Not condescending, but an honest question.

Comic fanboys are not enough of a market for a studio to make a film for, especially not an entire trilogy.

I really don't see people caring about Spiderman after this film ends it all, wrapping up the character arcs from the last 2 films.

Do you think anybody other than the fanboys will go to see these films without any of the people in this trilogy?

It depends. If they don't just mindlessly kill off Venom, and instead make it the "twist at the end" kind of thing (of course everyone will know that it will be coming), then people will really want to see SM4 because of Venom.

I like the idea of a Spiderman TV show like Smallville or Lois and Clark.

That would give us more stories and more villians. Of course with new Actors. The only problem could be the money (effects, setting etc)

i think those 'fanboys' DO NOT want to see the movie because of raimi, tobey, and dunst. tobey isnt that great of an actor, and people will want to see the movie, because its spiderman. As long as they get an actors and actresses that fit the roles, than itll be alright. (I'm not sure about how good or bad the new James Bond is, but i hear my friends asking why the new Bond is an wrinkly old man with blonde hair 😕 ).

-Spider-Man live-action tv series would be amazing. Smallville's special fx seem alright, but the spidey special fx look way more complicated. itll be interesting. 😎

i just posted this just great oh well

As long as films make profits, and sequels have a good opportunity to make profit, then studios will finance sequels.

The characters not the actors are the draw of the Spider-Man films. Even to the general public audience. They aren't star-driven features. No one goes to see Spider-Man because it's "Tobey Maguire's new film", or "Kirsten Dunst's new film".

Most of the movie-going public don't know much of Sam Raimi, again he isn't the draw. His leaving would have a significant impact on the franchise, but thus far I've only seen indications in press of him being receptive to do more.

Yeah face it guys Spiderman 4 will not happen, although we are eagerly awaiting number 3, there is already a sense (spider sense?) that its begining to get tiring, alittle bit stale, the comic book bubble with regards to movies is just about to explode, Just like professional wrestling has peaked. Flogging a dead horse comes to mind whenever I think about a spiderman 4. Although a Smallville type series would be great and prolong Spiderman's life within the general public. This time however choose an actor who is "good" not a little nerd or insecure superhero, and please make him sarcastic like the spiderman in the comics. If they do make a Spiderman 4 it will most likely damage the franchise/ fanbase of the films. I ask of you to remember Superman Movies, One was great!, Two was great! 3 😘 😘 and number 4 ❌

the only actor that has been able to make sort of 'star-driven' movies are people like, Johnny Depp, thats all i can think of really.

they COULD continue the movies but if there were always 2 year time intervals between where the story picks up, spiderman would be getting real old real fast. In Sp3 he should be practically done School. Sp4 continuity he'd be like 24 or 26. He won't have the school struggling factor anymore.

or they could do a spiderman remake a few years from now. Just like how The Hulk is now filming a remake. I think its very likely that itll be better than raimi's films. theres nothing unique about raimi's spidey flick, besides that fact that its a spiderman flick. he's not even that great of a director. peter jackson and del toro to me, are great directors.

I think Venom will die, Harry will, sandman might... or he will turn good.. but it would be a great way to end the triolgy, i would be happy, but they should make more... by the sound of things they have it now where all the villains die.

i think they'll show Venom defeated, but not show him die (like xmen 3, they 'killed' many characters but they didnt actually show the killing,ex//cyclops. Maybe end with a symbiote-is-still-alive cliffhanger or something.
