The whole story goes that Venom took a massive bite out of Sandman during his involvement with the last incarnation of the Sinister Six. He escaped and merged with the sand at a beach. Spider-Man found this out when young pop idols started being swallowed by the beach itself.
Sandman could not hold together all the personalities he absorbed (how he absorbed their personalities as well as their bodies, I have no idea) and he once again melted in with the beach.
The last time Sandy was seen, he was battling the different aspects of his personality manifested physically as a Sandgirl, a Sandtoddler, and an Evil Sandman with Sanddogs. Those issues could have been better, but they weren't.
In the end, Sandman realized his good side was just a hollow ideal he couldn't live up to, rejoined, and returned to the William Baker/Flint Marko we know.
