Are kids getting dumber?

I was in Science Research today when an interesting topic came up. My teacher was telling us how in the 50's we were the country. We had more engineers than anyone else and we were inventing things here and there. Nowadays, we have about 1/9 as many engineers as Indonesia and places like that. He blames it on kids my age not having standards because their parents dont want to be parents, they want to be the kids friends. This is kinda disturbing because, in the long run we are gonna be f*cked because there will be more dropouts and dumbasses than educated people with real jobs. Any thoughts? (i know this is incomplete and lacks allot but I am tired)

Kids probably are getting dumber. That's why schools have to watch who they hire.

I don't think kids are getting dumber, teachers and parents are no longer teaching kids what they should know. Blame the parents, and teachers.

Well I think the kids are getting dumber because the teachers don't take enough time to asses all of their students needs.

its the the teachers the kids and the parents faults in different situations...some kids are lazy and dont try... some parents dont show encouragment for kids to do their best so kids find it useless or the parents cut them down... and some teachers are just idiotic. but i dont think kids are dumber its just seems like it becuase of our deteriating economy...correct me if i'm wrong

Our kids may seem like they're getting dumber...but they're not. My little sister (Age 5) is learning math I myself didn't learn until 5th grade. And I skipped a grade no less!

From my own experiences there is a very high emphasis on math (as Draco69 pointed out), but very little on Science.

I also think it's because many students with learning difficulties are not getting the help they need. Too many students in a classroom, or teachers just ignoring a students needs.

I know what that's like, I have learning difficulties myself, was never taught anything at school, just ignored. As a result, I am 22, have never had a job, and can't get one, eithor.

The teachers are getting dumber

then theres the whole excess energy issue "meh, he bounces around too much... just give him some ritalin..".. then they shunt the kid off to the side and ignore em

USA seems overmedicated... pills for eating, sleeping, breathing.. its rediculous

I think all of these factors contribute to the success rate of individuals

I'm an engineer that works in a manufacturing plant. The main reason our country has less engineers is because many of our manufacturing companies are outsourcing their processes to China, India, and the like.

Our local plant has threatened to move production to China, but we have had to come up with cost-effective reasons to keep the plant in North Carolina, and so far we've succeeded.

The kids don't get dumb. The problem, as many have said here, is that parents and teachers don't really care what they do. Some parents don't know what they're kids do at school or how their grades are going. Some teachers don't care if the kid fails or passes. Having such instructors in schools (especially public schools) it's no wonder kids are incapable of telling you the last book they've read by the time they get to college...and that is if they make it. Yes the kids need to take an initiative as well, but they sometimes need role-models to be there for them and point them in the right path. 🙄

I agree completely with this^...

they were exactly the points that I was going to make🙂

it's a little bit of everyones fault..

When I was in year 10, we got a new English teacher. I was very surprised to see that she had trouble pronouncing some words😂

Nationally, the average class size in primary schools was approximately twenty-seven, while upper-level classes included between thirty and forty students. Ninety-two percent of primary school students graduated, but only about 60 percent of those continued on to junior high school (ages thirteen through fifteen). Of those who went on to junior high school, 87 percent also went on to a senior high school (ages sixteen through eighteen). The national adult literacy rate remained at about 77 percent in 1991 (84 percent for males and 68 percent for females), keeping Indonesia tied with Brunei for the lowest literacy among the six member nations of the Association for Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Perhaps "number of enginees" isn't the best metric to use, eh?

And durring the 1950's, guess what the American educational system didn't have? Special education classes! Then, those came into vogue (in fact, were mandated by the Supreme Court), and suddenly money that used to be spent on top students--the engineers-to-be--is being diverted to challenged students with no hope of ever becoming engineers, but--thanks to special education--with the hope of at least becoming something. It's a trade-off.

We're all dumb in one point in our lives. Age has nothing to do with it. If you can present me with a Super Genius 2 year old then I'll change my mind.

Actually intelligence has little to do with age... you will never learn better if you had trouble picking things up... a genius is a person with an intelligence quotient of roughly 140 and higher...

And naturally kids DO learn faster which is why THEY are taught multiple languages... its all about innate skill, not acquired knowledge...

Kids are not getting dumber, teachers are not getting dumber and parents do care. You're all wrong.

Tell me one kid that won't surprise the masses today with what he knows.

Tell me one teacher that wouldn't genuinely teach with quality with the student purely in mind if he or she were paid more.

Tell me if you had a kid in school or if you'd have one in the future, you'd wouldn't care about his/her education.

Maybe if subjects like English, math and the Sciences were taught and made more interesting instead of being dull, kids would be interested.

Maybe if teachers were paid more, they'd be more dedicated. I heard most teachers barely earn enough money for doing one of the most important jobs in society.

And maybe if parents were more educated on what to do and how to become really involved in a kids learning process, then maybe Kids won't turn out so "dumb" if all the parties involed took proactive stances.

Acting like you care or looking like you care is not enough. People need to understand that.

And the media has a lot do with it too.

Well, if you put it that way, I agree.

Just wondering, do you guys have a union?
