Battle of losers

Actually, back in like the 60's and 70's every major hero or group lost horribly to villians that would get laughed off the page today. Browsing through old Spider-Man issues is sometimes fun, if only to see Spidey having a hard time with some random loser in a bear suit or something like that (the Grizzly). And anyone who's been around long enough has some really embarassing defeats.
