evolution is caused by a species adapting to changes in its environment in an attempt to survive or maximize its efficiancey of survival through trial and error mutations. If a particular trait fails, it is eliminated. If the species can't adapt, it becomes extinct.

Not all animals that are crossed like Mules are sterile. It all depends on the number of chromosomes, odd or even, that the new animal has. If it is even then it can reproduce. If an animal has an odd number of chromosomes it will be sterile.
