I think the best solution for baseball is to add a 5th umpire sitting up in the booth with access to multiple HD replays instantly. On plays where there is an obvious mistake (things like the double tag out at 3rd, tagging up early, a trap in the OF, fair/foul, NOT balls/strikes or very close plays like at 1st) he can simply buzz down or talk into the crew chiefs ear real quick and fix it. It would not slow down the game much at all.

What do you mean when you say "NOT balls/strikes?" Do you mean exclude ball and strike calls or do you mean pitches that were either strikes or not balls? Or something else?

Anyway, in college football they review every play anyway. Why not review every pitch and play in baseball? Hell, pay me $100 an hour and I'll tell you what color shoelaces they're wearing.

But if you review every pitch, will the 5th umpire have the right to overturn an umpire's call? Like after a called strike, the umpire gets the message that the 5th umpire thought it was a ball. Is he thereby forced to reverse his call?

I meant that ball/strike calls would not be reviewed at all. If you are going to do that there is not even a point in the home plate umpire there are computers that can tell ball strike at will but I think the variations in the umpire on ball/strike is something that is actually part of the game and not an issue.

That's interesting that you mention that. I'm picturing Wimbledon and the fact that every call is still made by a linesman. However, you get 3 challenges per set, and those calls are either confirmed or reversed via computer. That way they keep the human element in it to a large degree, but if there is a crucial spot, out goes the human and in comes the computer.

I know balls and strike calls by the umpires are part of the game, but I wouldn't be surprised if, one day, managers were given the option to challenge the strike zone, and that call was made by a computer. Ooh, the baseball purists would love that!

Yeah...install replay on every checking a swing...ugh! Bad calls are part of the game.

I don't know if a computer calling balls and strikes would be a good idea. Have you ever seen Pitch Trax? That thing is terrible and nowhere near a good strike zone.

Anyway, GO PHILLIES!!!!

That's not true at all.

Good to be back, though, my computer's been busted these past two weeks.

A bit of an exaggeration of course, but ratings are not great for it. They are up from last year (13%) but that is largely because of teams (and last year was very bad, by bad I mean the lowest rated WS since ratings existed) and playoffs in general were down 20% in 08 from 07. The Phillies/Rays was terrible for ratings last year. I am sure MLB wanted Yankees/Dodgers though Philly should still do well with ratings.

But a simple fact is we had a playoff baseball game on a sunday night earn a 3.7 rating. Meanwhile Regular season Sunday night football pulled a 12. Regular season football almost 4 times the viewership of playoff baseball.

Fact is if more people cared and wanted to watch FOX would be showing more of it, but they know better and dont want to give up that much of their prime time schedule and risk losing all those prime time viewers to other networks.

No, I meant literally it wasn't true. The reason why they don't show both championship series' on Fox is because TBS not only outbid them and ESPN substantially, but it also protects the MLB from having to pause the start of games or have an extended schedule in case of extra inning games. I'm pretty sure Fox was unwilling to commit to interrupting one of their sister networks to play the game in such an event. Plus, it got the MLB much more money to award the two championship series' to two different networks, with each alternating between the NLCS and the ALCS every other year.

I feel what you're saying about people not watching, though.

This is a good game...too bad I hate them both and by watching it, I'm dying a little on the inside.

Well at least the Angels didn't cut it close or anything. Jesus.

If these games keep going on like this...I may need to be rush to the ICU....good grief!

As long as the Angels force game 7, which I think they will, then I am happy.

Don't worry, Victorino will hit another Grand Slam off CC like last year.

I'd like to believe that but he has been a much different pitcher this year in the playoffs than before. As much as it pains me to see the yankees go to the series and beat my angels,I'd just as soon that they lose tonight then tease us by winning tonight then taking it to game 7 just to lose it all in game 7 knowing that they should have gone to the series with just a victory tonight.

That idiot angels manager really made things tough on his team letting A-rod beat them in game two pitching to him in the late innings.Had he not done that, they would be going in to new york having to win just one game instead of two.game six against Pettite will be an easier victory for them where game 7,all we can hope for now is something like the 85 royals/cardinals world series where John Tudor dominated the royals in his first two victorys against them but then came unraveled in game 7.

I just dont see C.C doing that in game 7. The angels are faced with either having the best performance ever from their starting pitcher in game 7 or their bats are going to have to finally wake up and come to life against C.C.I think option A is their only chance of winning right now, that he is going to have to match him pitch for pitch, run for run for it to be close.that sucks knowing they would be in such great shape knowing they SHOULD be coming back to new york only needing to win tonight to go on to the series but their manager blew that for them. 😠

Really? He's a much better pitcher now than he was? Because I remember CC being absolutley lights out last year all the way til the playoffs when the Phillies beat him. He was 11-2 with the Brewers and 1.65 ERA, with 7 CG and 4 of the shutouts. It's hard to get much better than that.

Oh, unless you mean he's doing better in the Playoffs then he usually does. Which is true, but he was as hot as they get, just because it suddenly became the playoffs doesn't mean he automatically wasn't hot anymore.

Anyway, game 6 postponed helps the Phillies even more. If the Angels force game 7, and then lose, CC won't be able to pitch til game 3, in Philly, which is where I want to see him pitch. If the Angels win, assume Weaver pitches game 7, he won't be able to go til game 3 either.

If Angels win game 6 Lackey is throwing game 7. But to your point, if this goes 7 it is great for Philly because it limits both opposing aces.

Didn't Lackey just pitch game 5? Well I guess it would be 3 days rest. Either way it works though because Lackey and Weaver are the best pitchers on that team. Seems risky though, because Weaver's been pretty damn good this year and will have more rest. I assume since it's game 7 that Lackey and Weaver might both be used to get a win anyway though.

Yea Lackey will have Friday/Sat/Sun off so not too terrible.
