I believe the incident you are thinking of is when depowered Tyrant confronted Galactus on his worldship, and Tyrant took control of the ship and began to suck the life force out of Galactus with it.
Galactus's blasts did make him more powerful though.

In the fight we are talking about Galactus blasted him but it powered up Tyrant and then he tried using his ship against Tyrant but technology bends to his will so he used that against Galactus as well.

Full power tyrant had a galactic empire and was using bio orbs and such. We have no idea exactly why FP tyrant took so long to beat. But we know he got beaten.
