Lucas was suppose to replace Ness in SSBM.Since that didn't happen, he might replace Ness in SSBB.
The original purpose of Smash Bros. was to bring about a sense of nostalgia. That's a large part of what made it successful.
A game can't be too nostalgic if it features characters that are brand new to the player.
