I think, FOTN, a lot of the appeal is that gamers these days are very competitive (just look at the popularity of deathmatch) and this game hits that spot in a very fun and casual way that also appeals to fanboy instincts (not using fanboy as an insult here) because of the crossover potential...... but it is ALSO because it appears to have hit the spot in so many iother ways- use of graphics, sound, the list of features, the enormity of both its playability and its longevity... you can enjoy it alone and with friends... if the critics are right then it has ticked all the boxes about what a good game should be.
I think that really is why. It's not that it's a game for everyone, it's that it does everything it does so well.
The single player "story" is just compelling enough to play through, the challenge of the non-story single player modes is just enough to make you retry "one more time", the multiplayer is just chaotic enough yet just controlled enough that you'll always play "one more match." Even the Challenge Board shows you the next challenge that awaits you, so if you're trying to "complete" the game that shadowy block and hint on how to break it is just enough to make you go after it.
The fact is that Brawl has hit upon that formula to make you play "just once more."
