Sakurai has revealed a new item that is, in my opinion, incredibly cool: Assist Trophies.
They're basically updated Pokeballs, but with a twist that makes them infinitely better. The characters that come out of them are simply Nintendo characters, not restricted to being Pokemon.
The two showcased so far are a Hammer Bro from the Mario series, and Samurai Goroh, arguably Captain Falcon's greatest nemesis. The Hammer Bro obviously hammers opponents, and Goroh seems to run across the level, slashing wildly with his katana.
Sakurai said that all the Assist Trophies would not be playable characters, so most likely they will be notable secondary characters and enemies from the various series. If Ridley is not playable, he may still appear as an Assist Trophy.
