As for it's problems, the characters are generally boring specifically the blonde kid (one of the main characters can't recall his name). It also takes for ever for the plot to advance and dedicates like 6 episodes to a single battle (a massive flaw that is all too common in anime). The story shows promise, but with the bland characters and incredibly slow plot progression I can't stay interested.

The Mountain is objectively a great character though. Him being too deep for you to understand isn't a problem with the writing.

They are not boring though, and Armin is the most interesting of the main trio. Levi is also a more interesting character than every character in the Kingkiller Chronicles, which is sexist.

Sure, the pacing in the battle of Trost is a little slow, but the tone of the show may have required it to show the horrors of warfare in detail. Indeed, Shingeki no Kyojin more than almost any shonen I've seen defies standard tropes regularly, without having to go out of its way to do so.

Of the three leads, he is the most normal, yet no less traumatized. He's arguably the mentally strongest character, considering Mikasa is a robot and Eren's a psychopath. He also happens to be utterly ruthless when he has to be.

He's one of the main characters in the Survey Corps, lol. He factors heavily in the battles against the Female Titan and shows up again in fighting condition after Castle Urgard.

FMA:B is my favorite. I enjoyed Steins:Gate, Gurren Lagann, and various others. Also, as is evident from my sig, I like Evangelion (although that may be due mainly to nostalgia).
FMA and Gurren Lagann are pretty good, and Steins:Gate is trash/I haven't watched it. NGE is however great.
I like just about everything in Attack on Titan, pacing included. The style is incredible, voice acting is tolerable, characters are believable, and perhaps most of all, it explores more thoroughly and depicts more viscerally than almost anything I've seen in visual entertainment the pathos of war: the bravado and glory of combat on one hand, and all of its horrors on the other. Depending on context the violence can be exhilarating or devastating, as it should be, without ever really straying into that weird fetishistic territory I feel like some entries revel in. Plus it has an awesome intro.
Overall, just brilliantly done, and made even more effective because it's all rendered so beautifully.

Attack on Titan: Lots of people die, amazingly it works like a charm. Plus it has Levi, the human Beyblade.
And that opening music which is so awesome I have it as my ringtone.
FMA:B is way, way better than the 2003 anime. So much closer to the manga. Evangelion is awesome.
Amazingly one of my favorite animes is The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya for reasons I cannot comprehend or put into words.
