More recently, the Arkansas League of the South protested against a fundraiser for victims of the shootings at the Orlando nightclub Pulse.
The idea isn't quite as much of a reach as you seem to think. My experience in Nebraska was that people who fly a confederate flag use it as a shorthand for a particular collection of political beliefs, covering a range of issues from orientation and gender to race and religion.
