Except that that democratically elected leader committed treason by executing Order 66 and orchestrated and manipulated his way into the Senate in order to alter the law and become Emperor. He also falsely claimed that he would return the emergency powers given to him after the war was over. Also, he's a murderous evil psychopath. So, not a good point at all. 🙂

His intentions aside, there's no proof he did anything differently from any other politician who wanted to be senator.

By the time he received word that the war had ended, the Jedi coup had already begun. He had no chance to relieve those powers.

I mean, the reason it's not a 'good point' is that the Jedi Council knew the republic was being manipulated by the Sith Lord, and many thought Palpatine was under the Dark Lord's influence in some way.
Obviously Windu and the Jedi felt pretty safe in thinking they could expose high treason, and they were entirely sure he'd committed it.
