Yeh, I'd guess that because it's talking about a celebrity it falls more under the realm of knowing a fact than being familiar with a person. Kind of like how in English you'd speak differently about knowing of someone and knowing someone.

Saber has to do with knowing facts or information.

Conocer has to do with knowing something ( usually a person or place ) personally.

People and places can get confusing because you can know ABOUT a person/place and you can know a person/place personally.
