TJ, I am going to be away from the internet for about ten days, maybe longer. The best response regarding racism that I've found is the column by Leonard Pitts Jr., which I have linked to below. In regards to the other issue, that the Arizona law "codifies" racism, I can only submit that my perception is fundamentally different than yours, as we have yet to agree on a definition of racism. When I see a law aimed at Mexican immigrants (as this law surely was, given the source and ultimate destination of many illegals near the Mexican border) that allows for endangerment of civil liberties in the fashion described I cannot help but to think it racist. If your understanding of the situation holds some way of reconciling the target of the bill (which is, implicitly, Mexican immigrants) and the implementation of the proposed solution then we clearly have some sort of fundamental difference that will have to be identified before the discussion can continue.

Really quickly before you go: You said that this law was aimed at Mexican immigrants, and that isn't the case. Its aimed at Mexican ILLEGALs, which means they don't have access to all the protections from our constitution, am I right?

This. RH is more concerned about the human rights, whereas we are more concerned about the legality of a specific group of people, before we consider their rights. And since the illegal immigration problem is costing Arizona over 2.7 billion dollars, I'd say that gives them a little leeway in approaching this matter the way they've been doing it. I couldn't agree more with it, frankly.
