Just to clarify that, I said that would be so with the NEC if, in turn, it was established that the NEC was an authoritative source. The argument was so aggravating I wanted it finished as soon as a definitive answer had been reached. The fact is in life that, lacking a universal rulebook that hands down undeniable judgments of right and wrong, some people are still going to believe their own views no matter how irrational, which is why things like the Hollow Earth theory still have followers.
Hence, there is never any such thing as an argument that will be 'won', because even if proved 100% and undeniably there will always be those that do not accept that- this is definitely a phenomenon heightened in on-line debate.
So in some cases, there needs to be a set of rules and an arbitrator to settle them by some criteria, because watching these arguments run on and on anyway is one of the most godawful things that destroys the qualities of these forums.
Hence we have rules about what we consider canon around here, because the most godawful of all the godawfulness was the canon debate (incidentally, the canon threads, and indeed the general rules for the SW area, will be updated this summer).
When it came to that argument referred to above, I never have any problem acting as arbitrator, much as people malign those who make judgment. If an authoratative source could have been shown to have made hat point then I would have ruled out more dbeate on that point.
Didn't happen, sadly, but that was the theory.
