TPM's pacing was horrible. Anakin needed to get to adulthood by that movie with the Separatist movement underway. That way, the Clone Wars and his fall could be depicted in two full movies.
Pretty much spot-on.
* Anakin should have been introduced as a young man in his late teens/early 20s, for a few reasons: (1) so the actor portraying him could be reasonably expected to convey the proper level of characterization and humanity; (2) so it would properly begin the symbolic mirroring of Anakin and Luke (who is introduced to the audience around the same age); (3) so the audience would be able to sympathize with him, as late adolescence and early adulthood is usually a time of trial and tribulation even when one is not surrounded by galactic warfare.
* Obi-Wan should be established as an ideal Jedi Knight whose past is not ideal: His dialogue with Yoda in The Empire Strikes Back indicates that he was once rebellious and unruly as well as Anakin. This would add a sense of common ground between Obi-Wan and Anakin, cementing their friendship in something fully developed. It would also lend credence to the idea that Obi-Wan could be a successful mentor; he's struggled with the same issues as Anakin and pulled through.
* Padme should not be a Senator or politician, because it makes absolutely zero sense for her to be in the action at all. Instead, make her a smuggler, bounty hunter, or ex-Republic operative. It would be a nice touch to make her a Separatist sympathizer, to ground Separatist concerns in reality and flesh out their point of view with the audience.
* Palpatine should remain pretty much exactly as-is, with no Darth Sidious persona. The guise of Sidious isn't charismatic; he would be unlikely to inspire loyalty in his underlings as a jerkass hologram. Instead, he communicates with Dooku and Dooku alone and doesn't bother with the cloaked charade.
* Dooku would be the principal villain of the films, the Darth Vader persona. Obviously Palpatine is behind it all and is the ultimate evil, but Dooku would be the guiding force of the Separatists until Palpatine reveals his endgame in the final film.
* Yoda is hardly present in the films. The OT never indicated that Yoda was the head honcho of the Order. Instead, Yoda is on a Force-inspired pilgrimage to the galaxy's backwater in an effort to ascertain the true nature of the Force and the Jedi's role in the galaxy.
* His influence is felt through the Jedi's interim leader, Mace Windu, who is a militant hard-liner and the embodiment of Yoda's failed warrior mentality. He represents the militant nature of the Jedi, the nature that ultimately fails to prepare them for the Sith's treachery, and inspires Yoda to try a different tact.
I've got loads of these.
