Were the original member of the KKK that bad? No.
They were trying to defend a way of life that had existed for hundreds of years. It was the way they made their money, and sometimes the plantation owners didnt even make profit off slaves. Remember, they have to clothe them, feed them, give them medical care. They were, in their eyes, property, valuble property, and they were treated as such.
