The Lieutenant stopped in the hall the moment he heard the footsteps coming around the corner. Instantly, he could tell by the sound it was one of the smaller Spartans, and by knowing Raevynn's personality she would probably want to-
"-talk now."
The Lieutenant stood, unmoving, as he collected his thoughts. He had a million different ways to say this, and though all seemed to do the job, none seemed to be perfect. He closed his eyes, the darkness seemed to be a relief for him. "Spartan One One Six...Raevynn." He looked at her over his shoulder, so that he could see her out of the corner of his eye. He had not yet turned to her. At his sides, his hands relaxed, as they were previously clenched into fists.
No, now was a bad time to let down his guard. This was the wrong approach.
He turned toward her, glasses now gone, his eyes fixed with hers. The gaze, perfectly controlled, looked as though it could burn holes through the child's skull. However, to his appreciation, she did not back down. Or show any sign of faltering. That was good. "I can tell you all I feel that you should know for now." He said, "But as for you're question, I do not know where Axel is. At least, I cannot be completely sure. However, I can tell you that I do not believe that he is dead. At least not yet."
And suddenly, he softened. Kneeling down so that their heigts matched, he reached out to put a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Look...kid, I don't know all that you have been tought to believe, and while I encourage you to think that you are fighting for a good cause, the UNSC and those within it can be just as corrupt at those we fight against. Believe, I know. I've been there to see it first hand. I was part of it. That's why I am who I am, and I do what I do. And that is why I resolve to figure out what happened to Axel beyond a shadow of a doubt, or the UNSC will kill me in my attempts." He smiled. "But they've yet to do that."
He rose, brushing of his shoulder as if he'd noticed something there. He nodded at her own shoulder slightly, showing the small device he'd placed there. "They can't hear what we are saying. However they can see our lips moving, so look and don't talk. Understand? Good. Follow me."
He turned, and lead her through the complex. Eventually finding Axel's resting place. He toyed with the console beside the door before it opened. He stepped into the room as the doors parted, glancing at the still, barely visible form drifint in Axel's chamber. As he did this, the Sergeant at the controls jumped out of his chair and walked around his desk to face the larger man.
"Lieutenant! You shouldn't be taking her in here, I h-"
"Sergeant." The Lieutenant said, walking past him. "I was told that Axel was to be reunited with his family today, and I will at least give the commanding soldier in charge of those Spartans a chance to say her goodbye's. You've already sent them against Covenant and Rebels underequipped I think she can...handle it." He turned toward the man, "I'll make you a deal Sergeant. You let us in here, and I'll leave you the use of your legs."
The Sergeant opened his mouth to reply.
"Get the **** out." The Lieutenant said, before the man could get a word out. "And tell the Ambassador that I have to speak to him about his new AI program Nuron." He watched the Sergeants retreating back.
"Raevynn." He said, turning toward her, almost. "I may not have the perfect memory, but Axel was injured on his left shoulder in one of his earlier training exercises. The sixth if memory serves, 1:02 in the afternoon Earth Standard Time. The eastern training exercise? November 12th? It was sunny." He paused. "Nevermind. What matters is, he had a scar there. The being in this tank, is missing his eye yes, but there are no other scars. Follow me."
He led her to one corner of the room, and stood to her left. "There is a lot going on right now, more than you can understand. Connections range from the outer fringe to Eridani to Archeron IV, Siridani." The Lieutenant named off several of the major UNSC HQ's. "Earth. Too much for me to explain to you right now. I've not had enough interaction with ...people, but I am sure you get the point." He paused. "Talk. You have forty five seconds, and we have to start moving again."
