((OOC:: Alright, this post is a bit sloppy but the idea gets across. Also, I know it's ahead of it's time, but I have a series of these to stick up so I am going to start now. Plus I'm bored... W/e, so begins Axel's tale in his home away from home. By the way guys, your very own Princess Wolf managed to get me back into this. Thank her or hate her, either way. ;D))
“It’s just a test Spartan… We need to know everything. Remember?” …
Yeah… I remember…
”I just need to know how much pain your kind can handle.” …
I know…
”You can rest tomorrow 00. There’s more to do today. We’re on a tight schedule.” …
I understand…
”I know you can do better. You’re not giving me everything you’ve got. The human race is depending on you. Is this what you want to give them.” …
…No…
”You have to teach them. 051 wont be able to train these ones yet.”
OK…
Col. Ackerson looked up at Axel, his eyes peering at the younger man through the rims of his glasses. The Colonel was impressed, not that he would show this “Axel” this, however Hasley’s Spartan-III program seemed to possess very good results, the same very good results of her previous program. Those Spartan’s were good, he knew that, any man did, but they were not cost effective. He glanced down at the papers in his hands once before bouncing the pile once in his hands to straighten them and setting them down.
“It seems…” He started, pushing the papers to one side and clasping his hands together for several seconds as he leaned slightly on the desk. “…that the results of the last exercise we had you do are almost five percent worse than what you’ve given us previously.”
“I know I-“
“I didn’t give you permission to speak Spartan.” The Col. Interjected, almost casually. Axel shut his mouth instantly, though it was clear he still wanted to talk. Satisfied, the Col continued. “As I was saying… the results showed a small, yet noticeable decline in your performance. Now I’ve had… done some looking, or research you could call it into the cause of this and I can’t seem to figure out why you are not performing as best as you can.”
“Colonel with all due respect I’ve never given you anything but my best.”
“That’s not how I see it Spartan. You’ve shown consistent improvement in your ability and technique but the past two weeks have seen you slacking… As such I’ve sent some modification requests to all the routine and other runs you do I think we’ve been to lack on you… We’re not pushing you hard enough. You’re too good for your own good. We can’t afford to have you getting lazy.”
“I’m tired.”
The Col. stopped. That wasn’t exactly the response he was expecting. In fact, it took him several seconds to send a reply. “I beg your pardon?”
“I’m tired.” Axel said again. “You’re not making things to easy for me you’re pushing me too hard and with all due respect Colonel you’re starting to get the results of your ideas. I’m not capable of what you ask me and my body’s starting to reject it.”
The Colonel was silent for nearly a minute. “I don’t think so. The exercises you do may be different from the ones you’re fellow Spartans are doing on reach but the difficulty is approximately the same. The Spartan II’s did many of your own exercises without this problem… I don’t see how you could fair worse… You’ve shown a high degree of resilience and strength of many sorts.”
“I-“
“Do better. If that’s your best, then your best is not good enough. You better start showing us more, Spartan, or we are going to have to do something about it. Am I clear?”
“Yes sir but-“
“Good.” The Colonel finished, cutting him off. “Now get some rest. You’re relieved early today.”
Axel sighed, almost inaudibly, and left the room with the proper formalities. He didn’t think his exercises were of similar difficulty… It was never this hard on Reach… Thoughts along the same line drifted through his mind as he made he made his way to sleep. He never considered the fact that unlike the others, he had to do his alone. There was no on there for him to talk to.
Or maybe is wasn’t that he didn’t know… Maybe it was just the fact that it hurt so much he did his best not to think of it.
Pain is your friend… It lets you know you’re still alive…
