Does EVERYTHING have an opposite?

Oh I see what you saying.

All opposites have something in common. They need to be of same nature, but different degree.

Maybe it would be better illustrated if someone gave an example of opposites which arguably are believed that do not hold anything in common.

"Sound" and "Silence" don't really have anything in common at all.

Sound is a bunch of wave oscillations whereas pure silence is nothing. These nothing can't really have anything in common with something.

Yet these two are pretty much opposites.

2 and -2 have very little in common (they are both numbers).

I'd consider silence to be the absence of sound, rather than its opposite.

Debbie - what's the opposite of God?

Surely the opposite of God is everything with mortality.

Or anything not all-powerful, or all-knowing, etc. Everything, then, is the opposite of God.

Doesn't that make us all the devil, if we are opposed to God?

The devil isn't really opposite to God though just his competition... They pretty much do the same job anyway, except they have different target markets. 😛

Hmm, I see where you're coming from, but this is exactly where we disagree.

I believe silence and sound are the exatly the same phenomenons, with two different degrees - the two extremes, rather.

Silence is an extreme of sound, and the sound is an extreme of silence. Thats where the duality thingy comes in.

Actually, I like that explanation. It makes more sense than any other explanation of Devil and God.

You see, I look at it differently.

-2 and 2 are the two numbers which are the extreme of each other. Provided there are no + or - those two number would be exactly the same. + and - of these numbers is what makes them opposite, ie extremes of each other.

That is a great question! Since I believe god/spirit/force is in all things visible and invisible, there is no opposite. God is all and all exist with in it, both negative and positives....It just IS.

Hence the reason I used the term "Pure Silence"... Which is actually zero sound. No sound waves at all, therefor it's not on the same spectrum as sound at all really.

The answer is quite simple....

There is no spoon.

Depends on what dimension you are talking about. There could be many, and do you think they are all silent?

🤨

Who's talking about different dimensions?... The only way for pure silence to exist is for these to be a perfect vacuum and there is no such thing in this universe. Whatever goes on in different dimensions; if they exist is really not important to me.

So effectively you believe that there is something without an opposite (namely God), and so your answer to the question is no.

In the same vein as Spooony's current thoughts, what is the opposite of everything? 'Nothing' doesn't exist .

Well IF god is all then it is responsible for all the yin/yang, opposites, and everything in between............the Cause to our Effect or our affect........in a since the Alpha and the Omega........hmmm..........did men tamper with what the words of the bible could of meant?

If you believe God exists, and he doesn't have an opposite, then you also believe that not everything has an opposite.

I'm not sure what your post was getting at.

Spooony - the opposite of a vacuum could be a black hole.

I think I'd consider the opposite of a vaccum to be an atmosphere.

Who said god or what ever is a vacume?????

Well if a vacuum is the opposite of atmosphere, the surely silence is the opposite of noise?

Nobody, debbie, we're still considering an earlier question.

Could god also be the vacuum if it is all things?

*looks at RF*............lol

Yet this is a very cool conversation!!

Time to pull the Philosophical cop out:

"What is noise? Does it even really exist?" bored
