Anne Boylen blew my young mind when I read she went to her beheading wearing a gown of bright red, so that after her head was removed, the color of her stump wouldn't cause too much shock among the audience. Now that, wow--determined, plus she gave birth to Elizabeth I and she was undeniably tough as nails. She was definitely her father's child, strong, single minded, ambitious, ruthless, and passionate. She stood off her older sister, Mary when Mary made her bid for the throne. (okay, history major--I was my Daddy's 'son' substitute til my brother got old enough to dig what my Daddy did--me I just loved history). The phrase palace intrigues isn't just a term like retail therapy is now, for the goof. Bloody history--ain't it wonderful that it's also people?

THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL was AMAZING!!! Two things ImpPiDiva--one being what in the hell would catch your attention with regard to the dastardly Henry VIII--He's pretty much your basic issue cad and bounder in addition to him singlehandedly thumping the Catholic Church and taking all their wealth. They say (what I've read about him) that he was an amazingly charming man.Now the second thing: I don't know to whom to propose this so it falls to your my very astute piratista or whomever you can employ--I would like a catalogue of Jack's expressions with attendant photos from the screen caps or whatever. Can you do this or at least begin it? Love you and thanks.
lol...exactly his life story is crazy ridiculous....i dont know what it is about this King but in school everytime they talk or talked about him I always seemed to pay attention! lol He just really is a fascinating figure....well at least I think so. I mean not like admiration or anything, it's more like studying his madness and mentality seems like fun.

argh i know!!! i kept hearing that it was average, skanky, and did not follow the book at all... i thought the critics were dead wrong. sheesh its a two hour film they cant have every single passage of the book in there, but i thought it did a fantastic job of telling the story in an emotional, engaging way... exactly like you said, one or two major "OH SHYT" moments, everyone in the audience was freaking out. haha. the costumes were stunning--- her green dress, what is it about that color green? i mean Natalie was so good she made me cry on multiple occasions. she really embodied Anne Boleyn perfectly.
Well the movie really didnt follow the book, but i see why they did it the way they did. Like you said Kate they couldnt put everything in the movie (the book is like 745 pages or so) but it did capture the principle plot of the story wonderfully!
I bowed down to Natalie Portman in this movie! For some reason I could never imagine her in such a role of a seductress but she impressed me and really expanded her range with her portrayal of Anne Boleyn. One of my fav parts was when King Henry comments about her riding a horse by herself and that how will she hold on? To which she responds "Same as you sir, With my Thy's!" lmao lmao!! The tease in her smile and eyes had every man in the theater yelling "Oh hell ya!"
It was an awsome movie to watch in a crowded theater. It was one of those movies that had ppl gasping, laughing, and yelling things at the screen when scandelous stuff happened. lol
I know for me it was that he seeded Elizabeth I and she was a hell on wheels kinda monarch--she defeated (well, England) the Spanish and becos my daddy was a history nut, I have definite ideas about the Spanish and their cruelty and avarice. She stood off all the old men who would have forced her to marry. Selfish, ambitious, wild, and her daddy's child, a woman with a brain who used it true. My guess: not the nicest person in the world, but decidedly real and capable. It lead Jack to help choose Elisabeth to be the king. I'm going to go to see this Other Boelyn Girl over Spring Broke--(4 more days--yep).
Diva, I so agree. it was an EXPERIENCE to watch the film with a full audience--- everyone was so, so into it!
Willo, see it! I hated Natalie Portman before this film--- thought she was massively over-rated and annoying, but she had me eating out of her hand by the end of this film. She was absolutely dazzling. Why don't her and Keira do films together?
And the guy I loved from Across the Universe was in it-- hot like you wouldn't believe.
I like the seedier take on Anne Boleyn. I always imagined she really was everything the stories said. So I liked that they didn't bar holds in the film or the book. haha. A bit like Cleopatra or something.
Well Anne Boleyn's reputation was trashed already by breaking a royal marriage and being the cause as to why King Henry broke England away from the Roman Catholic Church. I think why this movie seems to be so harsh towards Anne is bc they show the side they've never really exposed about her and that's her harshness, envy and betrayal towards her kind sister Mary, and then betrayal after betrayal. 😮
We've always known a strong, firm, confident Anne who stood her ground when all of England was in an uproar bc of what King Henry was doing to Queen Katherine and their religious beliefs but we've never (well at least I havent until this book/movie) seen Anne stepping over her sister and doing her SO WRONG to get there. This movie just shows you that she got what she deserved. We saw her desperation and what ultimately earned her her beheading!
It's just a really great movie, I cant express enough how pleased I am with it!
Well, now there's a thought--perhaps Elizabeth I got her strength of will from both sides of her DNA. An ambitious woman, what other kind could there be in that time and space--surely as Sweeny Todd said, those doing and those being done. Having a bit of courage, nothing ventured nothing gained--yes lots to lose if you're particular choice played out, but so it would be. Powferful womens--aren't they just delicious--no milk toast bred here I can tell--and so much the better for it.
Miz WilloftheWisp, are you in your new digs yet? Soon come? How's the favorite KMCneffie? How's the Mom? (please, if I am too personal, tell me and I will be more discreet. I am proud you have shared with us.)
Not too personal, tex, lol. I leave Cali tomorrow to go to Dallas to my in-laws and they are helping me move to Louisiana. Then my parents will come to help me settle in.
What is the "KMCneffie?" I have these blonde moments where the hair burrows its way into my brain and if I'm not careful, I could become one of those that starts twirling their hair and only laughing when other people laugh so I can fake I get what's going on. Is that the baby? He's doing great. My prayer is that the timing will work out so my husband can be there for the birth.
I will see about seeing The Other Boleyn Girl. It's one of those that no one I know will see it with me, so there will be some coordinating to do.
I just want to know what people think about this since this is the off-topic thread: when a movie or book comes out that either makes outrageous claims about history or changes history for the sake of a story (Pocahontas, The DaVinci Code, Anastasia, The Other Boleyn Girl), is it the artists' right to tell the story they wanted to tell, or should they go with what is historically fact? I'm not talking about speculation like "what if Lee Harvey Oswald didn't act alone in killing Kennedy." I'm talking about changing relationships between people, altering ages and death days, making someone responsible for something they weren't, etc. Just wanting to see where people stand on this. I myself have mixed feelings.
dude, if its a novel and not a history book, i totally think the author should do whatever comes into their twisted little brain. i love messing up history. its fun, its soapy, its exciting... i DO hope, if ever anyone wrote about me, they would shake things up a bit to make it more exciting. lol.
the real stories of Pocahontas, Anastasia, are somewhat depressing. And the thing is, making them more cinematic in order to bring them to people everywhere increases interest in history and generally leaves people more knowledgeable than they were before about the subject. Any story involving Henry the 8th probably WAS as messed up as the films/books suggest, so I dont think they could go too far there.
Miz WilloftheWisp--go to the head of the class--KMC (famous) nephew yep, the one you're closest to.
Now to the question at hand--when it's history, I'm pretty much a purist--it would be like having Hitler be a ballerina...If the story can be worked within time frames and actual people okay--book on Marco Polo his time in China...based on an artifact he supposedly brought back from China--in some musuem somewhere. Inventing a totally new character, Cleopatra's exboyfriend's sister's cousin, twice removed....naw a tad on the what the hell side. Some less well-known actual person, that you can sit and spin about, sure why not. So...I'm thinking it's sort of an insult to thinking to spin a pretty story ignoring fact--just me....
I'll send up my prayer for your prayer--I'm also sending an email to Unity--they have an on going prayer circle--never hurts to ask, that's what my Grandmama said and having Dad home when he comes, yeah pretty big doings.
