I am not planning to have blades on mine, they would be just for show.
These are set up to hold either wooden dowels or lightweight PVC, so while shooting the film they have something to hit against and a reference point for when I rotoscope it.
When the "blades" are removed, we have pieces that fit inside that look like the light emitters.

My uncle, his kids, and I built a couple custom lightsabers today. The first one is a full size saber. The smaller one was built from the scrap pieces of the first one and it's the perfect size for a Padawan saber or small alien (think, Yoda) saber.Built them for our costumes when we go to conventions or Star Wars shows, but they will also be used as props in the fan film I'm going to direct.
These pictures aren't to scale and the hilts aren't 100% done yet, but this gives you a good idea of the finished product. We already added more, but I didn't take pics yet.
I showed off your work to my coworkers. That is soooo friggin' cool, dude.

I decided to take my time and make the first one the one that can be flipped open. Here are a few parts I ran across earlier:
Mag Lite handle for the hilt. Belt clip, washers and old lug nuts for design. Old radio for transistors and shit, wiring. I gotta buff the rust off them and paint them up, but they'll work nicely. Mag Lite handles are perfect for the hilt. I got like twelve of them ✅
My lathe is out, gotta fix it or find a new one, got an arc welder, need some rods. Dad has a soldering iron, It'll be done shortly.
