We agree, Spoony. Lumanix just gets himself confused and ends up chasing his tail. He can't do it himself, so he palms it onto others and, ironically, spends months sitting in his room being depressed.

It was a genre and some people still make music that fits truly into the real genre, so technically it does still exist. I can bet that the bands you believe are "emo" aren't actual emo bands, though.

Of course something is not always true because everyone says it is because in a lot of cases people are simply ignorant but when it comes to things like the arts, public perception is everything, simply because it's all made up, so there are no real facts to support anything.

As for "Avril Lavigne is a real rock chick!" if the most people class her as a "rock chick" then under the opinion of the public she is that doesn't mean I have to agree with it. This is not saying that Rock is not a genre though, I'm just saying she doesn't necessarily fit into it... Which is totally different scenario to my comment about the 'genre being a genre' comment.

You got the first part right, the ignorance part. Then you went and ruined it by being ignorant and saying there are no facts. There is such a thing as musical history, factual events and movements that happened.

Public perception isn't everything. I think you meant to say that the listener's perception or interpretation is everything. Because the general public, for the most part, don't have a clue about anything. They think Fall Out Boy are punk, for crying out loud.

If you don't know musical history and choose to remain ignorant to it, then at least admit you are. Don't stroll around calling things emo that aren't emo. It's stupid and idiotic. The public don't decide what genre music is, Spoon. Metal is metal for a reason, a reason proven by the way the music is played, written and vocally presented, more often than not. There are distinct elements within the music that make it different to rock music. The public didn't decide that, the musicians did.

Since when did the general public's opinion carry any weight? Especially considering these are the people who voted Bush in and keep Justin Timberlake at the top of the charts. The general public's opinion on music is the TRL chart, and these are the people you are saying dictate genres? Get real.

A genre is a genre for a specific reason, they're not just names thrown to music. Emo, in this case, was labelled such for a very specific reason involving the music. It was a genre as far removed from the general public as humanly possible, if you do the research. It was anything BUT mainstream-embraced. The general public had nothing to do with emo.

To be perfectly honest, Spoon, the only reason I study music is out of respect for those who make it. I care about the music first and foremost, how it makes me feel, like you do. I don't "do" the whole 90 different genres, most of the names today are pointless. The only reason I know and use some of them is for reference only.

However, in discussions, it's important to know your stuff for reference and as I said, respect. When musicians work hard, the worst act of disrespect, next to stealing their music, is trying to pigeon hole and getting it wrong.

I understand that you have a lot of respect for the Artists but I simply just fell from the other side of the tree. Music's not really a primary thing; It's just entertainment to me, like watching a film, I enjoy it but I'm not to interested in how much it cost to film, promote etc.

To be honest I wasn't planning on getting into a discussion about it, definitely not with someone who would have me completely outflanked, such as yourself but I simply just can't reply when someone question's my opinions and I wouldn't say I'm disrespecting the Artists by being simply ignorant.

If you ignore the history, the genre, the technicalities...fine by me, but ignore them completely. Don't say you don't care, and then go labelling them errantly.
