The Emo Test

You have to accept that music is not everyone's life AC. Maybe in the future I'll research but right now, I'm kind of concentrating on things that matter to me, like my education.

And it's not like I don't know anything about musical history.

And it's not like I don't know anything about musical history.

That's fine, but how does that relate to what I said?

Ok, music isn't important to you, I understand that. I understand you don't care about labels and genres, right? Neither do I, but I know well enough if I have to discuss, you do not. By no means is that uncommon, or a bad thing, but my point is simple: If you truly don't care, then don't label. If you care enough to label, label properly or don't label at all.

By saying you don't care, but making the ignorant choice to label a band or genre, you run the risk of doing so incorrectly. If you do so incorrectly, don't moan when I prove you are, or when I point it out. The common retort is: "Oh who cares?!". If you don't care, don't label. If you care enough to label, care enough to get it right.

At least be consistent.

I do label properly... I label the music the same way the band and the fans do. srug

I never said I didn't care. Don't put those words in my mouth.

That's not properly, that's just going along with popular opinion. From the fan point of view, anyway.

Fall Out Boy have been known to call themselves pop punk, and there's nothing punk about them at all, they make Green Day look like Fugazi (Ironically one of the original emo bands), so going along with them wouldn't work.

You are still operating under the assumption that genres are simply things that fans decide. They're not.

Just because someone calls Taking Back Sunday emo, doesn't mean they are (they aren't, by the way). Infact, most of these bands labelled FALSELY as emo, would deny that they're emo anyway. They may come up with a 'core label, which is even more ridiculous, but even they would deny it, because they're not emo.

Tool call themselves hard rock, and upon looking into it you can clearly see that they easily qualify as a hard rock band. Avril Lavigne has called herself rock, and her fans have also. Upon...well I was going to say further inspection, but upon first listening to anything she's ever done, you can see she's a pop artist.

Then if you care, care enough to not get it wrong, or alternatively; Keep your wayward ways of labelling bands wrong, just don't moan when someone more educated pulls you up for it.

To be honest I wasn't planning on getting into a discussion about it, definitely not with someone who would have me completely outflanked, such as yourself but I simply just can't reply when someone question's my opinions and I wouldn't say I'm disrespecting the Artists by being simply ignorant.

i agree with spoony on this one.

More educated? How is someone more educated in music? do you have some sort of PhD in performance practice? Even then I doubt it would count.

Who says I label music in the way popular culture does? Not me.. I only used that point to say that Emo was a real genre... don't take things out of context

Did you or did you not say that if many people say something is a genre, it's a genre? That implies that you believe in the majority opinion more than enough for me to make the educated guess.

Did you or did you not say you label bands/genres the way the fans do?

Either way; We've been over the emo discussion as a genre. Give or take a few bands, I've reason to believe you know what it is.

That was more in general than aimed at you. I think it's rather stupid to label a genre wrong, then when you're called out on it and proven wrong, say: "Who cares?".

I did, but that was just to reply so Matt's comment about you apprently saying that Emo was not a Genre... I said it because you can't deny the excistance of a genre.

Okay.... I agree... but why say a general statement in a conversation that's just me and you... 1 on 1?

You can't deny the existence of a genre, you can deny the credibility of a label, you can fault the application of a label.

I.E: Modern day "Emo".

Because we're not discussing us, we're simply discussing our view on a general issue, brought about by someone who "doesn't care".

6% Emo, nice!

Well, I'd love to continue this discussion AC but I'm going to hit the sack... If you see this as an argument (and I hope you don't) then I admit defeat.

I know what a lot of Genre's are and I'm learning about more all the time, I'm just not really great at assigning them to specific bands, that's why I use wikipedia, if it has them wrong, then I'll be wrong some of the time, it doesn't change the music.

You should write a book or something, you seem knowledgeable, maybe it'd stop you harassing forum members for a while... I'm only kidding about the harassment thing but you should consider writing some sort of book.

I'll call it Ye Book.

I'd never do that, though. I discuss it now and then, but I'd never attempt to cater to people who are genuinely stupid like that. If people still get it wrong after all I've said here, I'll be dead before I ever put effort into a book trying to help them.
