Well, Blazers weren't the only one to pass on Bird. Four other teams did as well and probably because all the teams had to wait to actually use him.
Bird, uh No, that wasn't what I was referring to.
Ok, I hate to bring back bad memories Myth but I'm afraid now I have to just so you can advise you're brethren up there in Portland not to make the same mistake twice. Quick trip down memory lane....
In the 1984 draft Portland had the #2 pick. (I thought it was #1 but I was wrong) They ended up taking Sam Bowie instead of a very popular player, even more popular than Bird.
I'm sure you could probably guess to what or whom I'm referring to now, right?
In hindsight, yeah, they made a bad choice...but thats in hindsight.
You can say that everytime somebody doesnt pick somebody in the draft, or whatever.
It's impossible to predict that Jordan would become one of the greatest players ever to play the game.
In hindsight, Toronto shouldnt of traded for Carter, but instead chosing Dirk Nowitzki. They shouldnt of hired Wilkins, they should, woulda coulda...didnt.
It's all in hindsight.
I agree but c'mon Sam Bowie? Over Michael Jordan?
They picked a guy who had a pretty mediocre college career not to mentioned he was seriously injured over a player who even back then was seen as someone who could dominate the game. Not only that but they ended up passing on these players as well...
* Charles Barkley
* John Stockton
* Sam Perkins
* Otis Thorpe
* Kevin Willis
I'm sorry but that's just unforgivable. What a waste of a #2 pick. No way was Bowie the 2nd best player in that draft. No f*cking way, even back then.
The mistake was that Portland drafted by position. Big Mistake! Don't ever draft by position, you take the best player available period!
Modern day example, Miami badly needed a good center or post player in 2003. They passed on Kaman, Collison, Sweetney and I believe they probably would've passed on Darko to had he slid but definitely not Bosh, they would've definitely picked Bosh had he been there, anyway back to my point they passed on all those position players and ended up picking the next best player available in the draft regardless of position and the rest as they say is history.
Btw, just to let you know how stupid and fair weather Miami fans are of basketball when the name was announced, everyone who was there was like who the F*ck is Dwayne Wade? And they booed the pick.

(I am the one with the girl wearing yellow)That is actually the reaction once the Hawks were given 3rd, nobody could hear that we got 1st and it took us a bit to see it on the screen. The radio audience apparently didn't know what pick we got for a long time because our cheers drowned out the broadcasters.
Did you even know the girl in yellow, or would you just have hugged anyone at that point? I can't tell if she's hot. When I 1st heard Portland got the 1st pick my 1st though was "How the **** did that happen?!" My 2nd thought was "Myth probally just creamed his shorts"...........And get a haircut. 😛

I loved it when they picked him, I watched D-wade in his college years at Marquette, and knew back than he was going to be a star in the NBA, I even called it on these forum before he blew up, but even I didn't think he was going to be a top 5 pick, not that I knew he shouldn't be, but I just didn't think anyone would have the balls to take him that high.
RZA - Yeah I remember that, I was just answering based off the last time we had the 1st pick. The last time we had the 2nd pick in that case would make it so we drafted Aldridge, so that doesn't seem so bad as of now. But honestly, I think it is unfair to compare Durant to Jordan and Oden to Bowie. At worst case scenerio it is like Olajuwon and Jordan. Neither one of these guys will be a flop, it is just hard to tell which will have a slightly better career. And as Smas said, its easy to say the Blazers made a mistake in hindsight. At the time, everybody agreed with the pick. Who knows, Bowie could have even been something if he didn't get plagued with injury.
Wuta - I do know her, she is my girlfriend. A Blazer loving, chick-flick hating girlfriend. 🙂

Yeah I loved Wade on Marquette so I root for any team he is on. If he was traded to the Lakers, sadly, the Lakers would be my 2nd favorite team.
Also, I was watching ESPN about a month ago, and they said the Sixers were VERY close to getting Michael Jordan on draft day. They were going to trade Dr. J for the Bulls pick. The GM was about to pull the trigger, but then he didn't go through with it. crybaby What could have been.

I appreciate the support Kool, and I love the core of players we have now. I think they could be title contenders in 3-5 years. I was suggesting to Portland's broadcasters that they dub Aldridge and Oden as the "Towers of Power" since Twin Towers has been used. As for the Celtic fans, oh wow what a seen. But I prefer this one:http://www.kgw.com/video/video-index.html?nvid=146379

Found it. Tonights ending reminded me a lot of it, besides the ball not going in the net.

Yeah, it's still fun to complain, or make fun of.
I just think of Raptors Aajuro pick. What the **** was that.....
I do agree that in basketball, you shouldnt draft for position and go for the best player available, but sometimes they're circumstances that you shouldnt go for the best player.
Let's say you have two really great SF/SG like Carter and McGrady on your team. Are you going to draft another SF/SG just because that guy is better than that C you might pick. If he is going to be stuck behind two guys and never play, and wont develop anything over a guy who can start right away and contribute. I think you go for that C.
Football is completely different...but thats a different thread....but yeah, I still dont think, no matter what the pick, you shouldnt really blame the GM at the time for the pick.

Yea, right, Lebron is really going to get a tic tac foul called on him on the Pistons court, you guys can't be serious. I didn't even think that was a foul period, Rip had position on him to begin with. Two more baby and where in 4 away from a championship, Detroit Baby Detroit!!!! 😱 😱
they're gonna choke 😘
