I still don't understand how a athlete can collapse a cities economy, let alone a sporting franchise.
A lot of revenue goes into advertising for the Cavs, specifically for Lebron. Lose that and that influx goes away.
A lot of factories there (and elsewhere) make clothing and house hold items that people will buy, so long as Lebron's face is on it.
Even the little guys can cash in on Lebron's star player aura.
Cleveland's economy is poor as it is. They haven't taken the recession well and their housing market is just awful. Cleveland is a blue collar town full of factories, which means union jobs. And those come and go.
A team at the caliber that Cleveland is at brings in the possibility of admission tax because people like to live where championship teams are. And the Cavs have been on the verge of getting a chip, even though they have fallen short.
And having a successful team like the Cavs attracts tourist. They do have the Rock N' Roll Hall Of Fame and Museum. So there are attractions, but you need something to really reel them in. That's where Lebron comes in.
Without Lebron, there's virtually no chance of that happening.
Think about it. The football they have their is average at best and only at the collage level. What else is there to do? Their music scene, while not bad (big Mushroomhead fan myself), isn't exactly a big draw.
Locals will spend hard earned cash to go to a Cavs game.
"Collapse" may be a bit much, but it doesn't help them if he does go. And he will.
