It's The Johnny Depp News-O-Rama!
Pirates 4! Mad Hatter! And Lone Ranger?!
Walt Disney Studios held a massive event today at the Kodak Theatre in LA, during which the Studios’ chairman, Dick Cook, made a string of announcements about their upcoming movies over the next few years.
And Johnny Depp was at the heart of it all.
The actor showed up on stage for a triple announcement which apparently ties him to Disney for some time. That announcement was:
• That Depp will return as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates Of The Caribbean 4.
• That he will star as The Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s next movie, Alice In Wonderland.
• Neither of those were huge surprises, but the next one was. Boy, was it.
For Depp has signed on to star as Tonto in a movie version of The Lone Ranger, which will be produced by Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
Now that's surprising - not just because Tonto is traditionally a role for a Native American (although Depp's great-grandmother was a full-blooded Cherokee, and of course he played a Native American in his self-directed film, The Brave), but because it's very much a sidekick role to the flashier Lone Ranger, a masked crusader for justice in the Old West. So if Disney has Depp in the second banana role, they must have someone really special lined up for the Ranger himself. And, of course, we imagine that Tonto will get a lot more to do in this movie.
Details on the timeline of all three movies are a little sketchy right now, but since Burton starts shooting in a couple of months on Alice In Wonderland, expect Depp to head into that first. That might not be a huge role, anyway.
Then, it should be onto The Lone Ranger, which has a provisional release date of 2010. Interestingly, this could put it up against Seth Rogen and Stephen Chow's The Green Hornet. Why interestingly? Well, Britt Reid - aka The Green Hornet - is The Lone Ranger's great-nephew.
Of course, The Green Hornet is a Sony movie, so it's unlikely that we'll see them team up, a la Tony Stark turning up in The Incredible Hulk, but it'll still be fun to see who wins the Battle Of The Reid Family in 2010...
And after that, then we'll see Depp return as Captain Jack Sparrow, although Pirates 4 is currently only in early development. But, given that Depp staggered on stage at the Disney event in full Captain Jack make-up and costume, it's clearly a role he's itching to get back to.

Johnny Depp in Alice in Wonderland, Lone Ranger, and Pirates 4!

I just walked out of the incredibly lavish Walt Disney Studios Showcase that previewed all of Disney's upcoming films for the next few years. The finale featured a trifecta of announcements regarding the one-and-only Johnny Depp. First, it was announced that he would be playing the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. Second, the USC Marching Band paraded into the theater triumphantly playing The Lone Ranger theme song, before Johnny Depp dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow appeared on stage, confirming his casting as the Lone Ranger. And last but not least, host Dick Cook mentioned that this might mean we'll see another Pirates of the Caribbean movie, confirming that a fourth film from that franchise is also in the works. Johnny Depp has definitely become Disney's biggest star!
My head is swirling right now with such a rush of news all coming from one sitting, but that's the latest straight from Hollywood. We saw some funky early concept art from Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, which will feature a combination of CGI and live-action visuals. Johnny Depp's involvement has been rumored for quite some time, considering he usually starts in almost all of Burton's films. As for the Lone Ranger announcement, that definitely came out of nowhere. We knew the film was in development, but that's it. And last but not least, early discussion about a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie is also news that has been rumored for a while, considering the third film made over $300 million last summer. This is definitely an exciting day today from one of the biggest and best studios in Hollywood!

- Johnny Depp may soon be yelling, "Hi-yo, Silver! Away!" Walt Disney Pictures announced today at a Hollywood event showcasing its upcoming slate that the star has been cast in the title role of The Lone Ranger.
After Disney honcho Dick Cook presented the film's logo, he told the crowd they looked at many good actors for the part and then asked the crowd who they think they should get for it. On cue, Depp -- dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow but holding a Lone Ranger mask up to his face -- walked out on stage and presented Cook with the mask, to which Cook replied along the lines that Depp was their pick to star.
The project will serve as a reunion between Disney and the team behind the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy. Not only will Depp star but Jerry Bruckheimer will produce and Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio have penned the screenplay. Earlier rumors even pegged Gore Verbinski as the director, although today's announcement didn't make any mention of that.
The masked Western hero last rode onto the silver screen in 1981's The Legend of the Lone Ranger. The character, of course, is most famous from radio programs, serials, and a 1950s TV series, which starred Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels as The Lone Ranger and Tonto, respectively.
Dynamite Entertainment is currently publishing a Lone Ranger comic book series.
From IESB.net, a little different take on the event --
A Trifecta of Disney Films - Johnny Depp as MAD HATTER, THE LONE RANGER AND JACK SPARROW (AGAIN)!!

They pulled out all the stops at the Walt Disney Studios Showcase today with everything but a marching band! That is until the USC marching band showed up playing THE LONE RANGER theme!
This is where it gets interesting, in the background the Lone Ranger logo appeared on the screen, but that's not all, the screen pulled up to reveal someone dressed in The Lone Ranger costume on a white horse and everything.
After the Lone Ranger left the stage, Dick Cook said Disney did not know just yet who would be playing the Lone Ranger, but he says they have had several candidates.
Just then, from behind, someone in full Jack Sparrow regalia came out onto the stage holding a nickel plated revolver and wearing the Lone Ranger black mask.
He removes the mask to reveal his true identity JOHNNY DEPP!!
The audience yet wild to say the least!
Cook says it would be a perfect Trifecta, Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland and now as The Lone Ranger and he promised Disney would throw in another Pirates movie for good measure.
It looks like Disney and Depp certainly have a long relationship ahead!
It was an amazing day at the Disney preview and Depp was certainly the icing on the cake!
This goes along with something we reported some time ago that Pirates helmer Gore Verbinski and crew including writers Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio would be behind the Lone Ranger film, Depp likes to work with those he knows...
These r several websites reporting the news...at first I thought it was a joke but then more reports started coming in!! I think this news may be the real deal!! What do u guys think!?
