hey in purgatory doesn't it give you visions of what you want most but then make them end awful?

I don't think it's completely out of character. It was leading to that. Jack had enough crap from people for being a nice guy. So he's tired of being Mr. nice guy. He is angry that he can't be as cold hearted as Barbossa, and he is somewhat also pissed that he can't be completely skilled in swords like Will.

Its like this song Anything you can do, I can do better, Jack wants to be better than Barbossa. He looks up to him and at the same time wants to be better than him.

Jack is too good of a man to be a full blooded pirate. Jack wants to proove that a pirate can also be a good man, but he needs to be realistic. You have to be clod hearted in order to survive in these waters, piracy it's at its end anyways.

I feel horrible for Jack. He is too sof to be a pirate. Im somewhat bothered with Liz but somehow grateful. Grateful because she helps in realizing things that he never knew like love, maybe.

-get captured with Barbossa and have to work together with him.

I don't think I could see Jack get branded. That would just be too awful.
You know what would be even worse on his mind than imagining Liz choosing Will? It would be nightmarish to somehow imagine her being swallowed up by the kracken instead, like seeing images of her suffering and maybe dying. I think that would about make him go crazy.

yeah i dont think i can watch Jack suffer, like real physical pain or real honest rejection.

remember that moment in potc 1 whne Norrington is making fun of his effects and Jack looks so nervous and vulnerable? gah. that nearly did me in. imagine watching his face if he got branded. holy crap. noooooo.

If you are talking about like torturing Jack, I dont want to see that...
