How powerful is Dumbledore?????

Ok we know that he was the most powerful wizard and we know from book 5 that Dumbledore took down Fudge, Umbridge and an auror (I think) and from the end of book 5, he can make Voldermort run away like a girl, no contest. However how many people can Dumbledore take down?

I mean without his wand Snape killed him, but with his wand a delirious Dumbledore took down an army of Zombies whilst protecting Harry and an Angry Dumbledore made Voldermort run away.

It's always been established he was the most powerful Wizard right from the start and yet one of the first things he mentions in Book 1 is how great Harry is and how powerful voldermort is.

My main question is that why was Dumbledore always portrayed as being so powerful if we don't see him actually do much? (Excluding the whole making Voldemort run away in book 5)

Did Rowling create a character she needed to kill off from the start? What help do you think Dumbledore will provide in book 7? (And yes before we go down that road again, Rowling confirmed his death but says he plays a vital role in book 7)

I think it merits it's own thread. The Ask Hermione thread is not for all questions, just usually the very simple ones. 🙂

Obviously Dumbledore isn't as powerful as JK led us to believe, not if he got himself killed the way he did .. . .that's not the way I would expect someone as powerful as he is to die.

yes, Rog , no one of us had expected Dumbledore to die that way. But thats what makes JK Rowling special, she does things in a way that no one expects.

I dony know guys, Grindlewald couldnt kill him niether could Voldie, perhaps seeing as Snape and he were close for so long he knew he had to sacrifice himsel for Harry and Draco plus the fact he was already ingured for destroying the ring and drinking from the fountain to get the 'bogus' locket there are alot of factors here. You never know he may have done it to ensure Harry wins,

the mind boggles though JK is quite a Slyth at times so hmm, what do you peeps think.

He is......was powerful.....at the time he died, his wand hand was like 'dead'.....plus the effects of that potion had not yet worn off and he was wandless......so I don't really see how him dying the way he did shows that he wasn't powerful😬.....let's not forget he managed to stop thousands of Inferi just after drinking the potion😐

And another thing......no one in the whole series could stand up to Voldemort in terms of a duel, not even the protagonist himself......but Dumbledore could and he even won their last duel.

Dumbledore didn't nessecarily make Voldemort run away "like a little girl." A bunch of wizards from the Ministery hurried over when they heard that there was a fight. Voldemort was forced to run from dozens of powerful wizards and aurors that would help Dumbledore

Hey all I know is Dumbledore kept calling Voldemort, Tom. Voldemort got angry and fought, Dumbledore got angry, forcing Voldy to possess Harry. Voldy couldn't stay in Harry and was forced to flee 🙂

That's actually a very good point 🙂

Yeah. He didn't expect that potion to weaken him so much. But I think Voldemort's stronger, but just because he's afraid of him doesn't make him weaker. 🙂

I disagree because of the fact that most characters (Eg. Hermione, Ron, Hagrid, Mcgonagall etc etc) said something along the lines of "Voldemort is the most powerful wizard, except for Dumbledore of course." Also the events at the end of book 5 IMO showed Dumbledore to be the more powerful wizard, but then again Dumbledore, was one of my favourite characters (Along with Mcgonagall and Snape) so maybe I'm just biased.

I think that with the Dementors in book 3, and Harry being able to chase off 100 of them, really starts to set Harry up as the next in line for "Most Powerful Wizard."

I think that even if DD is more powerful than Voldemort, Harry will be equal to Voldemort because of the prophecy. "Voldemort will mark him his EQUAL..." Something along those line.

What if by sacrificing himself for Snape, because of the agreement, Snape gains the same power of love that Harry has?...

The duel showed Dumbledore to be the wiser dueler, not necessarily the more powerful Wizard. Dumbledore once said that Voldemort has more powers and abilities than he could only dream about...Or something to that nature.
