Digital Rights Management

There are good things Apple does, iTunes in general being a pretty good program, Macs being very good as well, but iPods aren't and their attitude of shitting on their customers is their customers own fault for buying something based on smooth looks instead of excellent performance.

The problem with that is assuming that everyone knows all about MP3 players.

I did not know about other players until AFTER i bought my IPOD. The only real grip I have about my IPOD is the DRM crap, but I could have gotten a better MP3 player at better value had I stopped and waited (personally, I love the Zune but it came out after I got my IPOD).

Consumers often do not know about products they buy (I was guilty of this and did not know anything when I bought the IPOD).

For example, Macs have been getting that treatment in this thread alraedy. There was a commerical out saying Macs run Vista better than PCs, but there a problem of variables that come up here: they don't mention the specs of a specific Mac and a specific PC; it's just a blanket statement so of course it can be true, but anyone could build a rig capable of doing better than this Mac and vice versa.

No, it's not really assuming that at all. It's just stating that it's the consumer's own fault for not doing their research before buying.

It's certainly not Apple that are to blame for the irrational behaviour that make them incredibly popular (don't get me wrong, they are good, just not as good as their sales would imply).

Know what I mean?

Yeah, I agree with that.

I just am keeping in mind that hardly any consumer really "knows" what they are buying when it comes to electronics. Most people just walk in and say "what can do this?" and the salesman will walk them over to the "hot" item.

Bingo.

The educated consumer usually buys what they want. The average consumer gambles. 😐

The educated consumer....is that an oxymoron?

The idea of iPods preventing privacy doesn't affect me, since I buy my music. Maybe that'll teach you to stop being thieves, mugs.

isn't the problem that anything bought through itunes can only play on ipods

sony wouldn't limit a CD from their music publishing arm to only playing on sony CD player...i believe that might even be illegal so why should it be acceptable with digital media

i buy most of my music through itunes and now realise that i'm pretty much stuck with getting ipods in order to play them outside my home

i now also realise that ipods are cheaply made pieces of shit...especially the headphone jack

I have a Zune and I love it. I rent DVDs and use software from Cucusoft to convert the DVDs to video files for my Zune. The three inch screen is great for what it's worth, especially on airplane trips or long lines at the DMV. And with Limewire, I can file share all I need. I love file sharing. So, I guess what I'm trying to say is that DRM does not affect me at all. I never even knew about it until I just read this thread.

You can probably get software that can go around that. You should check it out, cause there are very good Mp3 Players out there that wipe the floor with most iPods.

yeah i know of alot of file converters but we're talking about 200 gigs of material in total and the time it would take to convert it all isn't really worth the hassle to be honest

i believe the other option is to burn them to disc and then re-rip them in mp3 format...but that would mean alot of discs

I can see why it WOULD be a problem, but it's not to me, since I have an iPod.

At the end of the day, to me, people arguing about performance are being silly in my opinion. It's not of such lesser, noticeable quality that I cannot enjoy it, so therefore I'm not entirely fussed.

I don't buy music from iTunes anyway. I buy CDs, put them on iTunes, and put them on my iPod.

Do iPods get FM radio?

so they?...never tried...i save them to the hard drive then import them into itunes though...i put them straight into itunes

obviously having an ipod means i've only put them onto an ipod so far

about half of that music (maybe a little less) is from itunes though

a lot of money's worth either way

i believe you can only sync a fixed number of ipods to any one version of itunes as well which means when i've gone through x number of ipods...i will then need to delete and reinstall itunes...is that correct?

the sound quality is not the issue for me...it's the build quality...and as i mentioned, in particular, the headphone jack

the problem is that after a while they only play through 1 ear and you need to apply pressure to the headphone connecter to get sound in both ears

at 1st i thought i has quite a unique problem but after checking out a dedicated ipod repair website it's apparently a very common problem

and given that i purchased the 80g ipod when it 1st became available at a cost of about £250 then for it to be essentially broken within a year is an utter disgrace

its also more irritating that it happened not long after i invested in a set of bose headphones to get better quality sound (because, quite frankly, the ipod headphones are terrible)
