Study Claims Iraq's 'Excess' Death Toll Has Reached 655,000

A team of American and Iraqi epidemiologists estimates that 655,000 more people have died in Iraq since coalition forces arrived in March 2003 than would have died if the invasion had not occurred.

... it is an estimate and not a precise count, and researchers acknowledged a margin of error that ranged from 426,369 to 793,663 deaths.

quite a stretch from bush's estimate of 30,000, which by his fuzzy math might equate to like 40,000-50,000 today. bush denies any truth in this johns hopkins study.

read this eariler today...John Hoplins University used a statistical analysis which isn't particularly applicable...

they surveyed 47 random areas...if even a few of those areas had unusually high death rates then it would skew the results

i believe they also took into consideration the overall mortality rate for all reasons as opposed to people killed because of military action

they also published a similar finding based on the same style of research that produces a figure of 100,000.

i still think that iraq body count probably have the most accurate death count...they've been using media and charity figures since the beginning of the war to calculate their figures

Well if that number is correct then it would still mean more people die a year now then they would have done under Saddam, and that's taking his total death rate on average per year which is unfair because he killed a lot more then just the average during the Iran-Iraq war. Removing that number would really lower the average or starting after the end of the First GUlf War would also really lower the number.

mmm...debatable...many would say that millions died because of sanctions after the 1st gulf war...not to mention the crushing of the shi'ite uprising post 1st Gulf war which some human rights groups estimated at around 300,000 (although some were prior to the 1st war)
