The idea of soulmates is suspect at best.
But anyway, the nature of comics (and Spidey confirms this) is to change and evolve. They knew they were going to kill Gwen issues in advance, so why not build up their relationship to make it more dramatic? If Gwen had never died, chances are their relationship would've never seemed as prfound and romantic. The death made it exponentially more important.
So, honestly, it's probably a coin flip. But it's far from assured that Peter would've ended up with Gwen.
He was with her in House of M and that proves she is his true desire
Mary Jane is great and is in someways perfect for Peter but I have always though that Gwen may have been better for him had she lived and that is coming from a reader that loves MJ, I just think that if Peter had to choose in a world where they were both alive and he hadn't been married to MJ he would pick Gwen because he really loved her most even if only by a fraction.
If she were alive they would be together.

That just means his desire for her was repressed. Not surprising, given the way she was taken from him.
You'd feel more attached too, if your arch-nemesis threw your gf off a bridge and she died....rather than if you dated for a couple more years, decided you weren't right for each other, and parted ways.

Of course I am prejudiced, because I think MJ is about a zillion times hotter than Gwen, but I think that while Gwen may have been his first love, MJ is his true love. I think if Peter had stayed with Gwen, eventually they would have broken up, and he would have ended up with MJ anyway.
But like I said, I'm prejudiced, for several reasons, which I don't really have time to get into right here. My argument stands, though 😉

Well I'd disagree on two things...Gwens hotter 😛, and the fact that Peter and Gwen went through alot of ups and downs in their relationship and only ended up loving each other more, I think they would have stayed together in all honesty, because also note Peter was never realy attracted to the "party girl" MJ which she always showed untill she and Pete got close, and I don't think that would have happend if Gwen hadn't died, but I guess your entitled to your opinion...even though it's misguided 😛.....

Pete and MJ work perfectly for me, but as I stated, I'm prejudiced, blondes just don't do it for me - so therefore it's probably best if I disqualified myself from this argument - besides, all this talk about MJ means I need to go take a cold shower now...
