Perhaps, but maybe squirrels hopping out of the way of an approaching car get confused by the sudden increasing noise when the driver steps on the gas again (thinking the rodent is out of harm's way). Resulting in the possibility that the squirrel thinks he faces something more threatening in the direction he is headed, and decides to turn around again.
