great list 👆
Yeah I'm not sure I could pick 10 ''best'', but my personal favorites would go something like...
1. GZA
2. Posdnous
3. Ice Cube
4. Jeru
5. Chuck D
6. MF Doom
7. Tre Hardson
8. El-P
9. Black Thought
10. Del Tha Funkee Homosapien
With honorable mentions to Cormega, Monch, Kool Keith, I Self Divine and Slick Rick. And also Vast Aire, who managed to be by far the best MC to emerge since the early 90's for the space of one album, but has been nearly unlistenable ever since.
I think out of that list, the top 5 definitely deserve to make the all time 10.
I'm very new to the rap and hiphop scene, so excuse my list sucking - they're not in any order, and they're just my personal favourites, not 'the best'.
Dr Dre (for his massive contributions to the genre, as well as the songs I love.)
The rest of NWA
Tupac (massively overrated, mind.)
Deltron 3030
Bloodhound Gang
Ghostface Killah
Rage Against the Machine (yeah, i know.)
Snoop Dogg
Originally posted by Alpha Centaurialot, not all. He aint bad, I just dont care for his music. there are alot of people who agree with me that KRS One is the best lyricist of all time, he and Big Daddy Kane.
A lot of people here actually hold that album in high acclaim.-AC
look up some of Big Daddy Kanes lyrics, they are amazing.
1)Tupac
2)Nas
3)Notorious (I h8 him tho)
4)Jay-Z
5)Rakim
6)Cannibus
7)Ghostface
8)MC Lyte (gotta put a female on here and she really kicked it off for them)
from here I can't call it but
RZA
GZA
Meth
Pete Rock
Big Daddy Kane
Grandmaster flash
KRS-One
Rev Run (from the DMC days)
Ice-T
Granted a lot of these emcees got on because of their historical importance, but I think the pioneers of hip hop should defiitely be on the list

Why do you assume I haven't read Big Daddy Kane's lyrics?Do you feel I'm unaware of him or something? I know my hip hop.

He and KRS One, man, they were just unreal. In my modest opinion, the only new school artists who come close are Naz and DMX. Jay z also.
Rogue Jedi, u like Company Flow?

A) That's a massive assumption you probably don't have the authority or research to be making.
B) It's not impressive for a real hip hop fan to know Big Daddy Kane, it's the default. You obviously don't know many people who like genuine hip hop.
DMX fell into the same trap as all mainstream MCs tend to. One good first album, then shit. Although Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood was pretty decent, different from a lot of what was out at the time.
There are many MCs out now who are amazing.
Speaking of which, being a Beastie Boys fan yourself, I saw Mix Master Mike live while I was in Canada. I accompanied some friends to the World Electronic Music Festival. He was pretty good, nothing to do with Beastie Boys was played, but good nevertheless.

No I know you are a hip hop historian, as I try to pride myself on being. strictly old school for me, though, with a few exceptions.

Hip Hop has really evolved since the days of Kane, G Rap, KRS, Rakim etc...
many styles have been formed with the inspiration of the old school legends...
