I smell bs. Got a link?
Cobain's thoughts on the videoMTV: What about Weird Al's "Smells Like Nirvana"?
COBAIN: Oh, I laughed my butt off. I thought it was one of the funniest things I ever saw. He has some good people working for him. Those people really know how to...I mean, I'm sure he has a lot to do with it, but they really know how to reproduce things to the T. He had the exact same setup. It's the same video with him in it. It's great.
MTV: Do you go along with the idea that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery?
COBAIN: Sure. Yeah.

True? I can understand what Kurt is saying, while we're on the subject. Not that it even matters to me.
It's not a valid point, he's not saying anything revolutionary or profound. "I can't understand Cobain, so I'm making fun of him.". Where's the validity?

It aint BS
Kurt said it at the time of release and i remember it well what with me being a fan of Nirvana when Kurt was alive
Maybe he was having a bad day when he made the comment(he did have them)as i also recall him saying that he knew Nirvana had made it when Yancovic did a cover of the track in another tv interview at the time.
It was from the days before the internet hit big...when people used to read the music press....
so no i dont have a link.
People are arguing it is valid because it is in some way true.
Others are arguing it is not valid because it is trivial.
It's a very trivial point. However, the main point is that it isn't some amazing piece of satire, it's just a Zeitgeist-humping parody. He could have done it with a Nile song, but it wouldn't have had the sales.
It wasn't some insightful deconstruction of modern music.
