My first impression of Saw
I wanted to share this with others, and get your take on it. I also want to see if there's anyone else that feels the same way about it that I do.
Ok, first let me say that I've seen a lot of horror movies, so I'm not speaking out of my ass when I say this. When I first saw Saw, I felt liberated; as a horror movie fan, it was a liberating experience. It was after I first saw it that I realized just how stylized and childish in horror concepts that a lot of the old horror movies are. Movies like The Shining, The Exorcist--I love these movies and think that The Shining is better than Saw, but their concepts seem so stylized as far as horror goes. It's the "ghost" the "supernatural monster" This is a lot of what the older horor movies were about.
When viewing Saw, what I witnessed was real horror. No monsters, no ghosts. No safe for hollywood act, just raw horror that was right in my face. I also felt like the antagonist, Jigsaw, was like a real person. I've can't remember feeling that from any of the older horror movies. I couldn't often relate to the bad guy, and so he seemed less frighting to me, less out of reach with reality. Don't get me wrong, supernatural can be good, but when it's done in such a high-blown manner, it losses its touch.
Was I drunk when watching Saw, or do some of you feel the same way about it compared to some of the older horror movies?
