Christmas or Xmas?

Started by marcu6 pages

I am a Christian so I do celebrate it as the birth of my Saviour. I am saddened by the lack of Christ in Christmas. Heck, in alot of places...such as schools or workplaces...you can't even say "Merry Christmas" anymore. It has to be "Happy Holidays".

Even in my own home it feels like we forget the real reason for the celebrations. It is sad. Gifts and decorations and food all overtake ones mind and we go insane.

Well first of all, I've never said "Happy Holidays" it's always been "Merry Christmas" even though I don't usually say things like that; I'm Atheist by the way.

The real purpose of Christmas in the celtic celebration of the winter salstas, which was originally 21st December, but the christians from the middle east decided that the holiday should be about Christ. Even though it's completely irrelivant.

So what you said is that Christmas really is about Christ. Arguing that we are celebrating the winter solstice is weak because that is not the purpose of these holidays. If it was we would not get a holiday. Christianity making a holiday on the same day as a pagan holiday does not make it the same holiday.

Jesus was born in the summer. That is why the sheep were out in the fields. So, why did they pick the wrong time of year to celebrate the birth of Jesus?

How did I say that?

Ow, my common sense and general knowledge.

No good reason. However, I think that arguing that we aren't actually celebrating Christmas is pretty weak and lame. We can choose to celebrate Jesus whenever we want. Just because it is custom to do it on a pagan holiday, it does not mean that we are celebrating a pagan holiday. Like Christmas, I could celebrate Easter anytime of the year, it doesn't really matter what the date is, as long as the the whole purpose (remembrance and thanksgiving) is served.

Putting decorations on the Christmas tree this year I began thinking. My views on life have drastically changed in the past few years. I used to be a Christian in the truest sense of the word. I accepted the teaching of the Catholic Church, did good deeds whenever I could in the name of Christ, prayed, went to church on a regular basis, etc. Approaching the end of high school, however, my views began to change, making me more of what I like to call an Ethical Hedonist.

Anyway, the point of this thread. What has Christmas become? Has it become so secular and commercialized that someone who used to be a Christian but has complete rejected everything that he was taught can still enjoy the holiday?

Has Christ simply been "X"ed out of the holiday?

What religion/set of values do you follow and do you celebrate Christmas?

All xmas will ever be to me is just an abbreviation of the word christmas...

i was born catholic, i dont support the bible, but i do believe in a higher power, and yes, i celebrate christmas...

Christmas for me is a time to enjoy the people you care about, spend time with them and enjoy the good things in your life, whatever that may be.

Then why celebrate Christmas at all, especially on a pagan holiday, in a pagan way?

You forgot about Christmas trees. What does that have to do with Jesus?
Decorating a tree is a pagan thing.

The way I see it, Christmas is like everyone's birthday, because everyone gets presents like it's their birthday. But I would celebrate it on New Years Day. Oh, and I love Easter, droolio oh the chocolate.

Tradition makes it convenient. If it was changed, I wouldn't object of course. Usually, my family celebrate Christmas on the 23rd because of work and time constraints. It doesn't really matter what the day is.

I think the presents on Christmas thing was started by Saint Nicholas in Germany. So it actually is a Christian tradition. I could be wrong though as I am not well educated in the origins of Christmas tradition.

I think you will find that his post was made in sarcastic mind..meaning he meant the opposite. Rather evident too.

True, the tree is very much pagan as in the ornaments we put on them....As with Jesus, as the story in the bible goes, he was probably about 3 years old when visited my the magi and they were only following the stars....the stars were seen as a science (Astronomy....Oooo my fav. song by BOC, (want me to post it?.........*gets CD out*......... and by Astrology, also a science)........the OT was full of Astrology and astronomy..........Hey, what were we talking about again????...

*goes back to look*........Noooo I wasn't smokin no doob.

Ok back.........I do say "merry Christmas" to those that say it to me...Other wise I say "Happy Holidays"...........I would say "Happy Mithra", but................lol

Also for someone who mentioned....celebrating birthdays are also pagan.....In the bible it was the "death of a person" that was celebrated.....

[edit] Listen now to Blue Oyster Cult!! Thanks for reminding me......
