The Jews pushed the Palestinians out of much of Israel and had possession of west Jeruslam by 1949. The Muslim nations surrounding Israel attacked Israel in unison, but lost and Israel actually gained the rest of Israel. The Muslim people beleive that the land belongs to the Palestinians because they were there before the Jews, but Zionists believe it belongs to the Jews because it is their promised land. Adding to the tension is the fact that Jerusalem is the holiest place and home of the Temple for the Jews and the third most holy place for the Muslims and home of the Dome of the Rock where Mohammed is said to have ascended to heaven.^
