Ah yes, the adaptation to the environment... that kinda makes sense. ALthough I did see an awful lot of people (soldier) walking the planet. They seemed well adapted.

But the risk of death to a soldier is much higher than an avatar Na'Vi.

Don't get me wrong, I liked the idea. But the motivation for such an expensive scientific enterprise compared to the major major corporate and military reasons to be there didn't quite make clear why they'd make such an effort. Nobody seemed to care or like the miniscule band of scientists.

We are also coming in on the tail end of a scientific endeavor to not only learn about Pandora, but try and teach and persuade the Na'Vi from certain war and death with the company. Dr. Augustine and co. were attempting to re-establish ties with the Na'Vi so they could save them. The company's higher-ups grew impatient of the situation and wanted a resolution more quickly. As was explained in the movie, the compnay invested and allowed for this to make good PR about benevolence.

So, what we see is the tail-end of an expensive effort to make scientific discovery and relations with the natives.

True but after they destroy the tree, there is no one there right away to mine this precsious rock that goes for 20,000,000 a kilo? they just are more focused on killing the rest of the na'vi.

There's a lot of things, and I mean a lot, that had to be done to start setting up mining operations.

Clearing the tree was actually the first thing to be done. The first day was clearing the natives and knocking down the tree.

The next day would be removing the rest of the stump...I assume.

But, the Colonel literally says, "that's it for the day..." after felling the tree.

I don't know if this was posted but...

this truly is not a surprise

Of course not, but it's nice to know that it's confirmed

This movie is a combination of 'Dances with wolves' and 'The matrix'.

And The Last Samurai... and so many others.

As someone once said about this film: if they go to such lengths to create such an amazing and orginal world, why not spend a bit more time on making the story original as well.

Nevertheless, as a start it great. Hopefully the sequels have more original scripts.

I continue to be baffled as to why SO many people love this movie. Every year there's at least one flick that gets so much praise that I just don't really dig. 2009's was Avatar for me. 2008's was probably Gran Torino. 2004's was Sideways, etc.

You shouldn't be baffled...this is Cameron, here. I would say that hardly anyone loves the film, but very few people dislike the film, which is why it's doing so well. Same with Titanic. He just made a universally appealing movie.

Well yeah, I get the mainstream appeal. But it just doesn't sit right when a bunch of my friends, who are admittedly not "movie people," come tell me that this was the best movie ever and stuff like that. I guess audience reactions like that are more what's baffling to me, although I AM surprised that this movie is making SO much money, mainstream appeal aside. It's really rakin' it in.

Exactly.

Foo Fighters will never be as loved and adored as some cult bands, but they'll appeal to more people AND maintain a credible flavour.

The Dances with Wolves part Cameron admits himself it has influences from it.

influences...its the exact same movie. Cameron copied it to a tee. Its total copyright infrigment. Kevin Costner should sue

More like the guy who wrote the book....

yeah. But I guess if you take someones story and add blue people and make them fly, then its apparently ok
