terminator 2 was all effects. the movie itself wasn't that great. same goes for avatar, titanic, and even the first terminator. the flicks themselves are average to good, the effects take them to new levels.
the only exception is Aliens which was actually a great movie on more than just the level of effects. haven't watched abyss.

I liked the first 3 Terminator movies, and Avatar was great too, Titanic i can't stand. As for the effects they all are trying to deliver through that.

It doesn't matter what it wins. It is PAINFULLY clear that the story borrows an almost tasteless amount of plot from other movies.
It being simple isn't the problem for me, I enjoyed Zombieland and that was as simple as it gets. The problem most people have is the borderlined plagiarism in Avatar.
Oscars don't mean much nowadays, but it certainly doesn't deserve one. It's a phenomenal experience, it's not an Oscar worthy plot.
It's a perfectly serviceable framework for the best visual experience in a movie ever. That doesn't mean it deserves a Best Picture award.

People going to see it doesn't mean they necessarily loved it anyway. There have been many examples this year alone in which huge numbers of people have been duped into going to see movies that have subsequently been utterly crap...Wolverine being a prime example. So figures don't equate to enjoyment, let alone good.

well since i speak the truth.... if this film were a huge flop, no one would be talking about it... well just because you say it don't deserve an oscar don't mean much... this is a good movie period... there are many films like this that have taken ideas from other subjects yet still is good and if you cared to read my ealrlier post after i had saw this than you would know that..

It doesn't deserve the "best picture" Oscar. It's plot and characterization are effectively just shoe-horned in as a device that allows it to be accesible to the mainstream.
Personally if they were going to make something just as a vehicle to show a revolutionary new visual technique then I'd be more inclined to see that than tacking a crap story and bad acting on to it.
Something like Koyaanisqatsi for example.
But then I'm in a severe minority when it comes to that opinion.

If it wins over the likes of the hurt locker (like the Golden Globes) then it's a complete joke.
At least in the last few years they've had some decent nominations and winners (the departed aside which was clearly just a pity award to finally give Scorcese a best picture award)

...And "good" movies deserve to be called BEST Picture?
It doesn't deserve Best Picture. If there was an Oscar for Most Ambitious or Best Movie Experience, I could understand.
Not to say there haven't been bad choices before (Hello, Slumdog Millionaire), but if you're telling me Avatar deserves the Oscar for Best Picture ahead of such movies as Inglourious Basterds and Moon - a movie in which Sam Rockwell outperformed anyone in any movie this year, alone - then you're off the trolley.
If someone gave you toast on a plate made of diamonds and gold, you wouldn't name that place "Best Restaurant" would you? That's what Avatar is. A standard meal (Nothing wrong with that) on the best looking plate of all time.

Well I think a lot of people would disagree. But I can't speak for them; for me personally though The Dark Knight blew me away the first time I saw it. I can't remember the last time before that where I had such a positive reaction to a movie in theaters.
Synecdoche was extremely meaningful/resonant and whatnot for me, but it also received more mixed reviews than just about anything else that year so I can understand it not being nominated, despite me thinking it's a much better film.
I'd put Benjamin Button and Slumdog on about the same level for me, giving the slight edge to Button. The cinematography in Slumdog was awesome, it had a very kinetic/energetic feel throughout, but if you strip it down it's just a fairy-tale of a story. One that was executed really well. Button just interested me more, but that's just my preference.
Oh and The Wrestler... I just think that's way better than Slumdog as well; had more of an impact on me.
