In my opinion, "truly exceptional" is highly debatable when comparing opinions, sir.
To some, "eye candy" and "popcorn film" can be misconstrued as "groundbreaking". Money earnings be damned.
Just take a look at Armageddon.
Film is a visual medium. What is the damn problem that so many people have with a focus on visual effects? I understand why you would want to destroy a film because it abandons all story in exchange for a visual firework show, but even then some movies don't try to share an intellectual story. Some movies simply attempt to inspire basic emotions for a thrilling ride. In the case of Avatar, it may not have possessed the most intriguing story but i believe it had originality in how some of that story was told. The visual aspect of, Avatar was just as important as the story was. Had the effects been any less astounding the entire project would have failed. You had to believe that Pandora and the inhabitants of the planet were tangible in order for the story to work.
I think saying that the movie was nothing more than a laser show is disrespectful and a bit ignorant. It was planned and designed to be a highly visual piece but that doesn't mean it is a mindless film. They're definitely weak characters and some of the story felt rushed and under developed but there were still very strong characters and a story that did invoke thought and wonder.
Considering that the main focus of this movie was concentrated on creating an Alien world using groundbreaking effects. I think the story turned out rather strong.

It's directors like this that give all of Hollywood (not to mention all film) a bad name. **** James****DorkCameron and the Toruk he wishes he ****in' rode in on. **** him hard, shove it all the way up the elbow, break it off and do it again, backwards and sideways. This is only yet another example of a most incredible concept in a fully magnificent story that he could do nothing except wholeheartedly ****. He ruins everything he has ever touched... True Lies, The Abyss, even Ti****ingtanic. He might have had a chance at going down in history with the masses convinced he had one iota of talent, but no more... no-fookin-more. What a complete and utter ineffectual misuse of millions!

He not only just made Aliens again, but made us pay (more) for it again, but now also he has soiled Sigourney Weaver. I don't know though, it's probably to early to even ponder a second Avatar, until, Cameron confirms it. Hypothetically though, as long as Cameron directs it, you wouldn't look forward to a sequel? I think after having already established, Pandora and some of the Na' Vi mythos there could be many possibilities for an intriguing story. Just as long as the sequel isn't, simply, Earth trying to reclaim Pandora.
I don't know, i guess it's far to early to even guess what kind of story the sequel would hold. This type of movie though, i'm less concerned with story and more interested in the adventure.
I'd like to see Cameron do something else in between a sequel but either way, i don't think we would see a sequel for at least another five years. Cameron is a smart man, i think he knows that his audience would need time to digest and forget about the thundersmurfs.
