It's not hardcore bestiality. The character Alan Strang rides a horse, and has feelings of sexual ecstasy. Really, this whole thread seems pretty immature. Dan has the right to branch out into any acting opportunities that he wants, and the play "Equus" is an extremely complex and intriguing play, and the role of Alan Strang has been played by such amazing actors as Anthony Hopkins.
Dan didn't have to play this role nude, some actors haven't, he's doing so to preserve what the writer of the play wanted when he wrote it.
Let's all grow up and stop making jokes about Harry Potter showing his wand, eh?

ditto to what Barker said, but also, even if there were some wand jokes, who cares? Surely Dan expected some to react that way.
Personally, I'm not sure if he's that good of an actor to play this role myself. It seems as though he's only doing it to shed his Harry Potter image, which I'm really questioning as to why

He's of legal age in UK and I applaud him for taking a serious role (most theatre enthusiasts consider his role in Equus to be very difficult and very demanding) to be a serious actor.
Harry Potter won't exist forever. Hell, the series ends in July. Does Daniel deserve his acting career to end with the book/movies? No. The purpose of such a serious and exhibitionist role is to break out of the Harry Potter mold. By strutting nude around a stage and stimulating an orgasm on stage as well, he's showing to the world that he's no longer a little boy, he's an adult who can do whatever he pleases, he intends to be a serious actor and he most certainly not Harry flipping Potter.
People need to learn to distinguish the character from the actor. They're not the same things. He's only trying to lengthen his career and have a successful job.

Because the book ends in July and the movie series is soon to follow.
He's only seventeen. The movies will end by the time he's about 22 or 23.
What's wrong with putting a stake in career capital?
It's what I would do. He's smart to venture into new career decisions.
If he doesn't start to shed the Harry Potter persona now, his career is gonna be cut short....

To shrug off the Harry Potter mold is certainly part of the reason that Dan's doing this, but this role is also a challenge, and he's said that he's excited to take it on.
I don't think that the director of the play would have cast him if he weren't a good actor. Sure, all the publicity helps, but people would go to the play even if Daniel Radcliffe weren't in the role of Alan Strang.
"Equus is an iconic play. The nude scene is part of it. I can't do it with my pants on. That would be rubbish.
"We've done the scene a couple of times in rehearsal. I had no particular qualms. There's nothing that would stop me getting my kit off if that's what the work demands. The key to serious acting is to lose your inhibitions, to become free and fearless."
This is what Dan's said, just recently, after the pictures have come out. I think he's being extremely mature about all the comments that are being made, and he also sounds incredibly committed to the integrity fo the play.
I've read "Equus" and seen a couple of versions of it, and all the comments that have come from Dan, the director, everyone involved in the play, really, have made it sound like this adaptation will be brilliant.
I came in kinda late sry but ye my mom told me bout the role and she said parents r flippin out but my moms cool bout it still he'll finish out the movies I'm sure cuz it wouldn't be right 2 replace him now I understand y he's doing this nude role but just because he persues his career farther doesnt mean hes going to give up his previous works
why would he be giving up Harry Potter?
He's doing this play when he's not filming.
He's done filming OOTP so why no do something in between filming for HBP?
and obiously, he's not ditching the Harry Potter role and going nude all the time. how ridiculous.
It's just something on the side, and i think it's good for him, he'll be expanding his knowledge as an actor.
