If he could crush the planet magically then why coil around it? Also if ir were magic wouldnt the effects last after it was separated from the planet?
Magic is ficticious (not real). Never question the stipulations of magic. For the stipulations of magic depends on its creator (the writer).
I've many times heard of magic only working when the magical object or being comes in contact with something else (in movies, books, etc).
And you should be actually questioning Marvel about this. As they were the ones who invented the storyline and explanations. I wasn't the one who stated ethereal coil around the Earth. Marvel did. So question them.
Now you somewhat get my point about that back in the day writers had no scientific knowledge and bad common sense (excluding the situation here that we are discussing since it is somewhat believable ). Most were just high school educated fools who were mega comic fans. That is why you won't see characters now performing some of the outrageous things they did in the past.
And know that, currently, Marvel writers consult with real Physicists and other scientists when writing their comics. Thus today's comics and movies are more believable.
Now answer me
Why do think writers didn't write current Thor doing some of the rare things he has done in the past? Why don't you write the last writer on Thor and see what he says (just contact Marvel at marvel.com)?
