Why is the age "21" such a milestone achievement?

Huh?

Huh?

You can legally get drunk.

I figured I'd get that response.

Because I was thinking, say they change the law to 23 yrs of age being the legal age to drink.

Would that be the BIG AGE to be and take the place of 21 just like that?

Probably.

I just think when you hit 21, you feel more like you're an adult, but that's just me.

Is the age of 21 as such a big achievement for those out there that don't plan to drink?

Any of those people here on KMC?

I thought 21 was the age when you're officially considered and adult?

18 is the legal age of adulthood.

I never placed any significance on either age. People tend to associate 18 with being able to do anything even if your parents don't like it, but I've always been given freedom to do whatever I wanted anyway.

As for alcohol, 18 is the legal age here, but I was allowed it way before, and discovered it wasn't to my taste, so at 18 I didn't feel the urge to get wasted because I could.

Because if you get the right combination of cards, you win automatically.

The only thing i see that's great about being 21 in Aus is the pay is more then if you were twenty, that's until you consider Tax. Tax ruins everything!

Because most people don't live that long.

I just turned 21 a couple months ago, and I don't drink...so it wasn't really that big of a deal to me, but hey, if I wanted to go out and drink, I can do so now.

I think they should just lower the drinking age to 18, personally.

I agree. I remember when it was 18 actually. I think its retarded that it got risen to 21. Men and women join the military and serve their country... can go into battle and risk their life but arent old enough to have a beer or something... its not fair in my opinion. 😬

I think the bigger problem is the fact that a higher age doesn't stop underage drinking at all and in fact makes the problem worse. It's human nature to want to do something you're not allowed to do; there's such a huge teenage drinking problem in this country because kids are never taught what moderation is, and think they're being cool by being a rebel and going out and getting totally smashed when they can't legally drink.

Well that I agree with as well.

I say, if you can smoke your life away, why not be able to drink as well.

I'm a bit of of a hedonist, I guess. I'm 19, I've drank a couple times, but I don't do it because it's forbidden. If I'm going to get drunk, what I'm drinking has to taste good. I don't get drunk for the sake of getting drunk. There should be more to it than that 😬

21 isnt anything really that important in Canada, since we can legally drink and do anything at 19. (18 in Quebec)

Still, it holds some kind of significance, I don't really know why though.

I don't think they should push it down that far. I think twenty would be a fair age to allow alcohol consumption. I personally think eighteen is a tad young. A lot of young adults (Especially here) still lack maturity to A) know their limit and B) not drink repetitively.

The legal age to drink here is nineteen.
