In GreenLantern some guy gets a Quardian ring but it takes control of him rather than being under his control. Plus the rings find people by seeking out those that produce fear.

Parallax will always exist because there are people who have fear of whatever and there are people who can cause fear.

As Val said - "Fear is the energy they use instead of willpower. Parallax would have to be the source of their power so yeah, hints all around I guess."
